Day of Unity planned for victims of domestic violence
Contributed report
October is Domestic Violence
Awareness Month
Join us in Powhatan by
wearing a purple ribbon all
month to honor of those we
have lost, support those who
are surviving, and celebrate
those who have survived. The
use of purple is a unifying
symbol of courage, survival,
honor and dedication to ending
domestic violence.
On Monday, Oct. 1 we
would like to invite you to
wear purple to celebrate the
“Day of Unity.” Domestic Violence
Awareness Month
(DVAM) evolved from the
“Day of Unity” in October
1981 by the National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence
(NCADV). The intent was to
connect domestic violence advocates
and service providers
across the country who were
working to end violence
against women and their children.
Wednesday, Oct. 3, The
Mill at Fine Creek will be hosting
their monthly dinner and
donating the proceeds from the
evening to PDVS to help provide
crisis services to victims/
survivors in need. To make
your dinner reservation visit
on in Powhatan:
Powhatan Domestic Violence
Services (PDVS) will
have a display up throughout
the entire month of October at
the Powhatan Public Library.
There will be DV Awareness
Posters displayed in various
county buildings and local
businesses throughout the
county.
Be sure to go by the Coun-
ty Administration Building
sometime in October to see
our “Teardrop” display. We
will be hanging one purple
teardrop for every victim that
PDVS has served since we began
in 2009. As of 9/6/12 we
have over 200 teardrops to
hang.
PDVS will have a booth at
Powhatan’s Festival of the
Grape on Saturday, Oct. 20
with information, candy, and a
50/50 raffl e. Stop by and say hi
and buy a raffl e ticket or 20 to
help support our mission and
possibly put a large chunk
back in your pocket .
Last but not least, “Enlighten
the Village!” Enjoy the purple
lights that our local businesses
are proudly displaying
to shine the light on domestic
violence in our community. If
you’d like to participate you
can purchase purple lights at
Target, Walmart, or any Hal-
Residents will have chance to dispose
of unwanted prescription medications
Contributed report
The Powhatan Sheriff’s
Offi ce and the Drug Enforcement
Administration will give
the public another opportunity
to prevent pill abuse and theft
by ridding their homes of potentially
dangerous expired,
unused, and unwanted prescription
drugs. From 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29, residents
are invited to bring
medications for disposal to
the Powhatan County Courthouse
located at 3880 Old
Buckingham Road. The service
is free and anonymous,
no questions asked.
Last April, Americans
turned in 552,161 pounds –
276 tons – of prescription
drugs at over 5,600 sites operated
by the DEA and nearly
4,300 state and local law enforcement
partners. In its four
previous Take Back events,
DEA and its partners took in
over 1.5 million pounds –
nearly 775 tons – of pills.
This initiative addresses a
vital public safety and public
health issue. Medicines that
languish in home cabinets are
highly susceptible to diversion,
misuse, and abuse. Rates
of prescription drug abuse in
the U.S. are alarmingly high,
as are the number of accidental
poisonings and overdoses
due to these drugs. Studies
show that a majority of abused
prescription drugs are obtained
from family and
friends, including from the
home medicine cabinet. In addition,
Americans are now advised
that their usual methods
for disposing of unused medicines
– fl ushing them down
the toilet or throwing them in
the trash – both pose potential
safety and health hazards.
Four days after the fi rst
event, Congress passed the
Secure and Responsible Drug
Disposal Act of 2010, which
amends the Controlled Substances
Act to allow an “ultimate
user” of controlled substance
medications to dispose
of them by delivering them to
entities authorized by the Attorney
General to accept them.
The Act also allows the Attorney
General to authorize long
term care facilities to dispose
of their residents’ controlled
substances in certain instances.
DEA is drafting regulations
to implement the Act.
Until new regulations are in
place, local law enforcement
agencies like the Powhatan
Sheriff’s Offi ce and the DEA
will continue to hold prescription
drug take-back events every
few months.
