The rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s family, was held at the Early House. It was a sit down dinner for 50 people which included family and friends and out of town guests. The wedding reception was hosted by the bride’s parents at the Early House. The couple’s favorite band played during the meal and for dancing later. Amanda and Brian graduated from Goochland High School in 2002. The bride received her degree from Ferrum College in 2006 in Criminal Justice. The groom served in the United States Marine Corps for four years as a Corporal with one tour of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He currently attends ECPI. After a honeymoon cruise in the eastern Caribbean, they returned to their new home in Goochland, Va. Meara Meara defends School Board’s budget, addresses accusations By Michael Copley Staff Writer In an e-mail sent to employees of the Powhatan County school system, Superintendent Dr. Margaret S. Meara defended the School Board’s budget for next year and sought to rebuff allegations that the school system used lay offs to try to leverage more money from the county. During a joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors last week, Meara said 36 employees of the county’s school system were notifi ed that their jobs would be eliminated or transferred at the end of this school year. Some supervisors questioned the timing of the announcement, which was made before a fi nal county budget is adopted. Based on both the School Board’s budget for fi scal year 2012 and the Board of Supervisor’s advertised budget, the School Board is faced with a defi cit that exceeds $800,000. Some suggested a reallocation of current county assets.” Board of Supervisors Chairman Joe Walton insists the School Board would have the money to cover its defi cit if federal stimulus money hadn’t been used last year to restore salaries that were reduced by 2 percent. The woman, using the alias “Ms. Smith,” credited the county’s domestic violence program with saving her and her children from a husband who turned the corner one night from emotional abuse to threats of physical violence. Call 598-4305 for details. gram coordinator, helped her fi nd emergency housing, counseling for her children, and walked her through the court process to obtain a protective order. “She talked with me when no one else knew what I was going through,” Ms. Smith said of Tinsley. “At some point he [her husband] would have fi nished what he started.” Ms.Smith said the county’s domestic violence program, a department of Powhatan Social Services, is “important for those who will be abused in the future.” “It’s not just about domestic violence,” Tucker told his fellow board members. “Every program is going to be looked at hard. Every program touches individuals. We have to have a heart. Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Beasley requested $7,000 this year to pay the remaining salary of a special prosecutor who handles cases in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. A grant, which has paid for the position until now, expired this month. Beasley also asked for money to retain the prosecutor next year, at an estimated cost of about $28,000. Board of Supervisors Chairman Joe Walton said he doesn’t know yet how much additional money the county will be able to provide, but he said the board would “do as much as we can do” to retain the position. Kathy Pemberton, director of Powhatan Social Services, told supervisors that Ms. Smith’s story “isn’t the only one.”
