perform at county’s food festival
set for April 9
Contributed report
Last year’s fi rst-ever Powhatan Chow Down
event was a huge success and an unforgettable extravaganza.
More than 5,000 guests attended the
one-day event, and over 2,000 pounds of non-perishable
items were donated to the Central Virginia
Food Bank and the local Powhatan Food Pantry.
This year’s festival once again will mark a special
day of food and music.
The event will offer something for the entire
family, including a kid’s zone with infl atable’s, face
painting, over 10 bands performing on 2 stages and
a tailgating area so the guys can relax and enjoy
the car, truck and motorcycle show.
Festival Director, Runda Harris says “It’s a perfect
way to blend a good cause with a good time.
We know what a great service the Central VA Food
Bank provides for our community but we really
want to help increase awareness of what they do
and give the community a chance to get involved.”
In 2010 the Chow Down festival goers provided
over 2,000 meals to hungry families. The goeal for
2011 is to provide 5,000 meals.
The Chow Down in Powhatan will take place
on Saturday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the
Powhatan County Fairgrounds, located at 4042
Anderson Highway. General admission is free and
so is parking.
The festival will also serve as the kick-off event
for Restaurant Week, which runs from April 10
through 16. During this week, local restaurant will
offer discounts and specials to customers. Contact
Tina Bustos, director of the Chamber of Commerce,
for more information on participating in
restaurant week.
The outdoor festival will serve up a variety of
cuisine from to 20 culinary establishments and numerous
crafters, artisans and exhibitors, transforming
the fairgrounds into bustling marketplace
where vendors will display an assortment of jewelry,
clothing, kitchen, food and wine accessories,
and home décor. The event will highlight a variety
of the region’s diverse restaurants, caterers, and
street vendors, with offerings such as BBQ, gourmet,
soul food, seafood, and vegetarian.
Festival goers who bring non-perishable items
for the “Hungry to Help” campaign will be entered
in a raffl e for a chance to win a prize. The food donation
will benefi t the Central VA Food Bank.
“If you’re looking for something to do during
spring break, then you’re invited to be a part of this
festival. There is something for everyone,” said
Runda Harris. “Bring your family and a lawn blanket
to enjoy the good music and food. It’s all for a
good cause – helping the hungry.”
