No. 2 Yellow Jackets take Gettysburg Tip-Off
R-MC uses balanced
attack to take early
season tournament
Staff reports
GETTYSBURG, PA – The
No. 2 ranked Randolph-Macon
College Men’s Basketball
team turned in solid backto-back
performances to
sweep the Gettysburg Tip-Off
Tournament.
On Friday, the Yellow Jackets
opened up the tournament with
an 84-62 win over Shenandoah
then followed that with a 56-42
win over host Gettysburg on
Saturday.
next time.”
Molly Brown was in the
same boat going 2-for-7. “Her
shots were not falling tonight;
but normally she is a very good
shooter,” LaHaye said. “She
definitely has the green light
when the ball is in her hands,
‘cause she’s one of our better
shooters and she’s not afraid to
shoot, and that’s what it takes.”
Maggie Roy led the Yellow
Jackets on back to back nights,
scoring 12 points against Mary
Washington and 16 against
Ferrum. Roy showed moments
of offensive brilliance hitting
7-of-13 field goals and 2-of-5
three-pointers.
Lindsay Sharman and Katie
Williams added 10 each while
Taylor Wieczorek pulled down
six rebounds on the night.
The final shooting percentages
varied little from first half
and from LaHaye’s standpoint,
the Yellow Jackets needed to just
shoot the ball. “We didn’t even
take the shots that I thought we
had,” she said. “I thought that
our shooters stood around a
little bit. We’ll work on it. The
things that I saw that we can
improve on, can be improved
on. So, I’m pretty excited about
Shooting 50 percent from the
floor in their opener, Randolph-
Macon featured three players in
double-figures, led by 16 points
from Danny Jones, (in 14 minutes
of action off the bench).
Calvin Croskey (13 points) and
Brandon Braxton who scored
12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Yellow Jackets got off
to a good start, taking a 22-8
lead midway through the first
half. From there the lead continued
to grow, reaching 25
points when Braxton converted
a layup with 17 seconds to go
in the half.
R-MC, which shot 69.7 per-
the spirit of this group and also
the potential of it.
“That’s always a tough job
for a coach is making sure
that your shooters continue to
shoot…whether they miss a
basket or six baskets,” LaHaye
added. “You’ve got to shoot,
‘cause you always miss 100 percent
of those shots you don’t
take. But the kids, they want
to be perfect all the time. They
take a lot of pride with their
academics, and they do the
same thing with their basketball;
and they just think that
they’re supposed to play perfect
all time. Sometime that
cent in the first half, took a
50-26 to lead into the locker
room and then opened the second
half with a 20-5 run in
the opening 10 minutes, taking
a 70-31 advantage on a threepointer
by Croskey.
The Randolph-Macon
bench outscored the SU subs
39-10, while R-MC held a 45-33
edge on the boards.
Facing host Gettysburg,
Randolph-Macon finished the
game on a 19-8 run over the
final six minutes to take the
game 56-42.
The game was a defensive
After a Powers bucket
taking a 47-34 advantage on a
Staff reports
Last week, former Hanover
standout Chelsea Coward
led the Longwood University
Henderson (Atlee) turned in a
dominating performance when
the Mount St. Mary’s women’s
of action, Henderson scored a
career high 17 points on 6-of-
three steals in the 81-58 loss.
But with 12:01 to play in the
second half as she scored her
17th point, Henderson suffered
close as they would get as R-MC
scored the next seven points to
seal the game.
