Last year’s first Rassawek Spring Jubilee
Wine and Heritage Festival was a success,
drawing praise from visitors for its wide
offerings, both for wine connoisseurs and
those interested in history and the heritage
of the region.
Sponsored by the Goochland Chamber
of Commerce, this year’s event promises to
be a crowd pleaser too.
“The chamber is excited to once
said Goochland Chamber of Commerce
President Travis Chewning. “The Jubilee
is a great event for our community. Please
come out and enjoy a day well spent in
Goochland,” he urged.
The festival happens this weekend, both
Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20 from
Goochland
hires deputy
administrator
By Ken Odor
jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland has hired Daniel J. Schardein III
to fill its vacant Deputy County Administrator
for Community Development position.
County Administrator Rebecca Dickson
made the announcement in a press release
Thursday.
Schardein, who holds a Bachelor’s degree
in Urban Studies and Planning from Virginia
Commonwealth University, has 25 years of
local government experience.
He most recently served as Assistant
Director for Zoning Administration/Zoning
Administrator for Loudoun County, wrote
Dickson.
“Mr. Schardein brings a wealth of knowledge
to Goochland County with over 25 years
of experience in development in local government.
In addition, we were very impressed
with his economic development experience
and his philosophy that community development
processes should support economic
development. We are very pleased to have
someone of his caliber join our team,” said
Dickson in an email to the Gazette.
Schardein will lead the Community
Development Department, which includes
building inspections, convenience centers,
environmental and land development review,
planning and zoning and public utilities.
He was scheduled to begin work with the
county May 14.

EDUCATION: School Board and Academic News
By Ben Orcut
Special Correspondentt
Zoe Parrish is humbled to
have been named Goochland
County’s teacher of the year for
2012.
Parrish received a $500 award
from the Goochland Education
Foundation (GEF) at the May
8 school board meeting for her
achievement.
“It’s hard to feel deserving
of it when you work with so
many other teachers that work
just as hard and put everything
into teaching and everything
into helping their students to
learn and achieve their potential,”
Parrish said.
Parrish, 28, has been a special
education teacher at Byrd
Elementary School for the past
two years. The previous five
years she worked at Goochland
Elementary School as a fourth
and fifth-grade teacher.
Parrish was voted Byrd
teacher of the year by her colleagues
and was invited to the
May 8 school board meeting to
be recognized. Being named the
county’s teacher of the year was a
surprise, she said.
“I did not know in advance,”
Parrish said. “I was thoroughly
shocked because of the other
teachers that I stood up there
with. I just had so much respect
for everybody. We were invited
to come to the meeting to
receive our school-based teacher
of the year award and then at
that meeting they announced
the county teacher of the year
award.”
A native of Fairfax, Parrish
graduated from Mills Godwin
High School in Henrico County
in 2001. She earned an undergraduate
degree in elementary
education and special education
from the University of Delaware
and a master’s degree in instructional
technology from Virginia
Tech.
Parrish said her mission is to
help her pupils succeed.
“Well, I think the one thing
that I try to promote the most
is to really look at each student
as an individual and to do absolutely
anything I can to help
them to be successful in school,”
she said. “My students are the
most important thing to me and
one hundred percent at the heart
of my teaching.”
Parrish said teaching “is a
calling, but it is my passion for
sure….I cannot picture myself
doing anything else but teaching
at this time.”
Seeing her pupils succeed is
rewarding, Parrish said.
“I love, absolutely love teaching
kids how to read,” she said.
“That is so rewarding for me,
watching kids improve in their
reading and especially with my
students, teaching them skills that
they’re going to be able to really
use in their lives.”
Not having enough time to
spend with her pupils is one of
the most challenging aspects
of teaching, Parrish said. But,
she enjoys the time she does
have with them.
“I have a large group of
fifth-graders and I will be very
sad, it’ll be bittersweet to see
them go on,” Parrish said. “I
won’t have them next year.
But some of the students I’ve
been able to work with this
year I really look forward to
continuing doing what we’ve
been doing for them this year
and watching them achieve
more and more.”
Parrish said being named
teacher of the year does not
necessarily mean there is more
pressure on her to excel.
“I think there’s always
pressure to try to do better,”
she said. “I think you want to
do better every day for your
kids and you need to do better
every day for your kids.”

Locals speak on school
superintendent’s resignation
By Ben Orcut
Special Correspondent
Goochland residents with
children in the county school system
had mixed reactions to last
week’s resignation of Goochland
Schools Superintendent Linda
Underwood.
Some parents did not want
to participate in a man-on-thestreet
poll for fear of retribution.
Others said they were not aware
of Underwood’s resignation after
nine years on the job and still others
said they didn’t know enough
about her resignation to voice an
opinion.
Underwood is the leading
candidate for superintendent of
the Sevastopol, Wisconsin school
system, where she and her husband
would be closer to family
and their retirement home.
Six parents of children
in Goochland County
Public Schools responded to
Underwood’s resignation when
polled on Saturday at Hidden
Rock Park.
“I wish she wouldn’t be
leaving because she is a very
wonderful superintendent,”
said Tammy Johnson, 41. “She
does [work] hard for the kids,
even though some people say
she don’t. But, she’s got a rough
job, so she does as good as she
can. She’s a wonderful person.”
Arlene Schwartz, 51, sees it
differently.
“Actually I’m okay with her
resigning because I have not
seen any improvements in the
school system since she’s come
on board,” Schwartz said. “I just
hope somebody will come in
and straighten out the middle
and high school. The teachers…just
seem to be against
the kids and the parents and I
would like to see the new person
come in and put a little bit
more time and effort into that,
at least the high school.”
Matt Nuckols, 39, is sorry to
Johnson Schwartz
Nuckols
Silva
see Underwood go.
“Well, she’ll definitely be
missed and I feel like her work
over the years has been very
beneficial to all the children,”
Nuckols said.
Rick Vincent, 50, won’t
shed any tears on Underwood’s
departure.
“Well, I don’t know that we
were real happy when the previous
superintendent resigned,”
Vincent said. “Me and my wife
both were not so happy with
Ms. Underwood for a couple
different reasons so we’re not
all broken up about it.”
NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
Vincent
Demdicer
Sonda Silva, 36, spoke in a
similar vein.
“My opinion is that some
fresh blood may do some good
in the county to get a new
perspective and a new view of
things that’s maybe a little more
updated,” Silva said.
Dave Demdicer, 48, spoke
highly of Underwood.
“I thought Dr. Underwood,
I appreciate all the hard work
she did,” Demdicer said. “She
did a very nice job. She brought
us forth and got us through a
transition stage and I wish her
the best in her future.”
School board meeting
filled with recognitions
By Ken Odor
jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Last Tuesday’s Goochland
School Board was long on
awards and recognitions.
Much of the evening was
devoted to honoring the five
teachers of the year, each
receiving $100 checks from
the Goochland Education
Association, except for Zoe
Parrish from Byrd E.S., who
was handed a $500 check for
being named Goochland’s
Teacher of the Year (see story
on page 2).
The other four teachers
honored were Barry Smith of
GHS, Ann Rohrer of GMS,
Lisa Brown of GES and Beth
Ferguson of RES.
Also honored were the
GHS Robotics Team, Science
Fair winners, School Nurses,
the SkillsUSA Team, which
placed third in the state at
Hampton.
The board also acknowledged
Lisa Landrum for
receiving an honorable men-
tion in the Food for Thought
Virginia School Board Award.
In action items, the board
as expected voted unanimously
to cancel the bid process
to outsource any custodial
workers after noting that
the proposals received were
unsatisfactory and that funds
were available to pay for the
positions.
The board also voted 5-0
to:
approve a school calendar
with a Aug. 20 start date and
180 instructional days
approve an agreement
with the YMCA giving school
employees a break on fees
approve the adoption of the
Aesop Substitute Calling System
at a cost of $7,340 annually with
an initial $5,750 set up and training
fee.
designated Assistant
Superintendent Peter Gretz
as Acting Superintendent.
In public comments,
NAACP President Sekou
Shabaka expressed concern
that a recent presentation
by Director of Secondary
Education Stephen Geyer on
grouping could lead to “re-
segregation.”
Using the new rules for
public comment, board members
engaged in discussion
with Shabaka about the issue,
assuring him that the proposal
was still under consideration
and that their goals and his
were the same.
“A group of us are going
down to Orange County to
talk about their closing the
achievement gap,” said School
Board Chairwoman Beth
Hardy.
Wendy Hobbs urged the
school board to include the
public in its search for a new
superintendent.
Hobbs suggested the board
do a survey of the community
to find out what they wanted
in a new superintendent
and that the process be “very
transparent.”
School Board Vice
Chairman John Wright said a
survey is envisioned.
County employees may
get 5.75 percent raise
But increase
would go to VRS
By Ken Odor
jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland’s Supervisors are
mulling over whether to give
county employees a 5.75 percent
pay increase to offset contributions
they must make to
the Virginia Retirement System
(VRS).
The county has the option of
phasing in the employee contribution
over five years or doing it
all at one time in July.
The goal in either case is to
avoid a decrease in employee take
home pay once they begin making
contributions to VRS.
Festival
continued from > page 1
Visitors can travel about the
grounds on a steam train from
one attraction to the next and
bring a blanket and picnic on
the grounds.
And if you should see a
group of cowboys who look
like they could be from south
of the border, that will be the El
Dorado Rodeo Group, who will
be on hand to perform riding
and rodeo demonstrations.
Jenny Liesfeld of Rassawek
Vineyards said this year’s Jubilee
will offer even more to visitors
than last year’s festival.
“We’ll have many more artisans
and demonstrators,” she
“Now you have the option to
do it all at once but you have to
grant at least a 5 percent salary
increase,” explained County
Administrator Rebecca
Dickson at the May meeting.
Many surrounding localities
have opted to do the 5
percent option in July, said
Deputy County Administrator
John Wack.
Wack said doing the
increase all at once would
keep the county competitive
with other area counties but
lessen the money available
for an anticipated one time
bonus.
The supervisors took the
matter under advisement,
anticipating a decision at the
June meeting.
File Photo by Ken Odor
Visitors to the Rassawek Spring Jubilee will once again be
able to enjoy a leisurely steamboat ride this weekend.
said, including potters throwing
pots on the wheel, lasso demonstrations,
a second music stage
and a puppet show for the children.
“We are very excited about
it,” said Liesfeld. “It’s so wonderful
to have the whole community
involved.”
Liesfeld said a grant from the
Virginia Tourism and Marketing
Center helped greatly in promoting
the event.
Tickets are available for the
Wine Festival or the Heritage
Show or a combined ticket for
both events can be purchased.
Thursday
May 17, 2012
Up to full strength
This month’s Goochland Board of Supervisors meeting saw the
county introduce a couple more key employees, new Director of
Economic Development Matthew Ryan and Deputy Commonwealth’s
Attorney Mike Caudill.
And last Thursday County Administrator Rebecca Dickson
announced the selection of Daniel J. Schardein III to fill the vacant
Deputy County Administrator for Community Development position.
Filling these positions in county administration and the constitutional
offices, should be a welcome fact for county residents and the
administration. It takes a full line up for a team to get the job done.
We look forward to getting to know the new hires and reporting on
plans for economic development in the county. Look for an interview
with Ryan in next week’s issue of the Gazette, where we’ll learn about
how he is settling in to the job and what plans are being made to bring
the desired development to the county.
Gas pains relieved?
A few weeks ago we wrote about pain at the pump as gasoline
prices approached $4 a gallon and were so bold as to predict that if
they stayed that way it might affect the results of the fall presidential
election.
About that same time saw the GOP seized on the issue, accusing
President Obama of not doing enough to ensure affordable energy
prices in the country. And the president defended himself, noting that
the chief executive has only limited power to affect energy prices.
Now that gasoline prices have declined about 10 percent, we’re
inclined to agree with both parties to the discussion.
It’s absolutely true that the president has little control over gasoline
prices in the short term, witness the causes of the current decline,
which appear to be concern over economic slowdowns in Europe and
China, among other things.
On the other hand, the idea that wise choices on energy policy by
whoever sits in the Oval Office and Congress are not critical is also
disingenuous.
Meanwhile we’ll just take advantage of the current downturn while
Remembering Mom on
Mother’s Day
With Mother’s Day upon us, I’d
like to pay a special tribute to all the
wonderful mothers who hold a special
place in their children’s hearts.
When I think of my mother,
I’ll always remember her sweet
smile and the tilt of her head as I
approached. When I reached her
arms she would give me a great big
bear hug, squeeze tightly and say
“baby girl.” I remember her holding
my hand in hers and rubbing
her thumb on my hand. I remember
her infectious laugh and silly sense
of humor. Memories that may seem
small, but are everything to me today.
My mom was Joan Weigelhofer of
Busy Bee Realty, and she is missed as
much today as she was on August 14,
2003, the day her life was tragically
taken away.
I miss my mom, not only for
myself, but for my husband, Jon and
our children, Sammy and Carson.
She didn’t get a chance to meet and
share her love with them, and for
that, my heart aches.
and passed away at Retreat
Hospital. He was preceded
in death by his father, Edgar
“Tommy” Greer Valentine;
of 31 years, Patricia “Patsy”
Tommy grew up in Richmond
from Thomas Jefferson
High School in 1966, where
he received a football scholarship
to Frederick Military
Academy and Virginia Tech,
where he graduated in 1971. A
Tommy attended law school in
he and his wife, Patsy, took
Innsbrook Rotary Club member
recognized at White House
Contributed Report
On April 20, Fred
Thompson, a Manakin Sabot
resident and charter member
of the Rotary Club of
Innsbrook, participated in
the first-ever Rotary Day at
the White House, where ten
U.S. Rotary club members
from across the U.S. were
honored as Champions of
Change for their volunteer
work in improving the lives
of others.
The day-long event combined
for the first time two
weekly White House public
engagement programs
– Champions of Change
and the Community Leaders
Briefings series—to recognize
the contributions of a
single organization: Rotary
International. Champions
of Change was created as a
part of President Obama’s
“Winning the Future” initiative.
Each week, a different
sector is highlighted and
groups of Champions, ranging
from educators to entrepreneurs
to community leaders,
are recognized for serving
and strengthening their communities.
“Rotary International is
honored to be a part of the
first White House Champions
of Change awards. Rotary
club members are grassroots
volunteers, successful business
and professional leaders
who want to give back to
make the world a better place,”
said Rotary International
President Kalyan Banerjee,
of India. “Champions of
Change could not be a more
appropriate description of
what Rotary is all about.”
It was the effort that
Thompson devoted to the
expansion of the Coal Pit
Learning Center in Western
Henrico that placed him in
the midst of this exceptional
group. Thompson, a founding
partner in the architectural
firm of Architects Dayton
Thompson Associates, PC
in Richmond was the driving
force behind this project,
which has greatly expanded
pre-schooling opportunities
to children from low-income
families.
Thompson explains with
pride that, through the efforts
of many Rotarians, the school
renovation was an immediate
success. The Coal Pit Learning
Center expansion has not
only allowed more children
to enter Kindergarten with
skill readiness and confidence,
but also creates an avenue
for parents to hold fulltime
employment or further
their education. “This project
was a prime example of the
power of Rotary and what
100 Rotarians can accomplish
that not only changes
the lives of needy children,
but at the same time showing
the community at large that
Rotary cares.”
Thompson is quick to
credit the efforts of the many
individuals and community
groups that participated in
the Coal Pit project. However,
he was instrumental in the
project’s success—chairing
the planning committee,
providing construction plans
and project management
for the expansion, as well
as soliciting and leveraging
cash donations of $100,000
with $250,000 of donated
Fred Thompson
materials and labor—which
doubled the size and service
capacity of the Center.
Both Thompson and his
Rotarian business partner
have provided their personal
and professional services to
charitable groups that sustain
needy youth. These include
the architectural services for
Thomas and Thelma Norman have lived in Goochland County almost sixty years and
celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 10, 2012.
They have one son and one daughter, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
is a showcase for this rude
behavior (and for the lack
of enforcement). Years ago,
striped-out “no parking” safety
zones were placed at the end
of parking rows to provide visibility
for shoppers and drivers
as they enter and exit the store.
I have small children and
appreciate this safety feature,
as I have seen people nearly
run over because they or the
oncoming cars could not see
each other. However, this safety
zone is usually filled with the
vehicles of those who would
sacrifice the safety of others to
save themselves a few steps to
the store.
But this parking rudeness
is just a symptom of a larger
malady in our land. Without a
CELEBRATIONS: Anniversaries
common ethic, a biblical ethic,
people imagine themselves
free to disregard others and to
make their own rules without
fear of negative consequences
to themselves. We see this lawlessness
practiced everywhere
in our land, practiced with
a militant swagger. But the
answer here is the same as the
answer to all our nation’s ills:
We need to return to the
God of the Bible, to a fear of
God, and to the practice and
defense of the attitudes and
behavior that are embodied
in a society that honors and
serves the Creator rather than
serving themselves.
Rabid skunk case confirmed in Goochland
By Becky Robinette Wright
Special Correspondent
The Virginia Department of
Health has confirmed a skunk
from Goochland was rabid.
Rabies is a dangerous virus
that is transmitted through the
saliva of animals. Anyone can
get it if they handle or get bitten
by an animal that has the
disease.
Not all wildlife has rabies
but the Center for Disease
Control (CDC) says that the
main types of wildlife that tend
to contract the disease are raccoons,
skunks, bats and foxes.
The CDC reports that 90
percent of all rabid animal incidents
are wildlife. Most people
who are exposed to rabies are
exposed due to close contact
with domestic animals, such as
cats or dogs.
The cases of dogs with
rabies has begun to decline,
but, the CDC says, is that the
cases of rabid cats is steadily
increasing.
Three times more rabid
cats are reported than rabid
dogs, officials say. The reason
being that cat owners might
not be as likely to visit a veterinarian’s
office, where their
cats can receive shots that can
keep them safe from rabies.
The most recent data from the
American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA) reports
that 36 percent of U.S. catowning
households did not
visit a veterinarian in 2006.
Rabies costs are not cheap,
coming in at around $300 million
annually. The expenses
include the vaccination of com-
panion animals, animal control
programs, maintenance of
rabies laboratories, and medical
costs which includes those
incurred for rabies postexposure
prophylaxis (PEP).
According to the CDC, the
doses of vaccine given typically
exceeds $1,000. The cost per
human life saved from rabies
ranges from approximately
$10,000 to $100 million,
depending on the nature of the
exposure and the probability
of rabies in a region.
The Advisory Committee
on Immunization
Practices(ACIP), states that
for persons previously unvaccinated,
a regimen with human
diploid cell vaccine(HDCV)
or purified chick embryo cell
vaccine(PCECV) is administered.
New recommenda-
tions from ACIP reduce the
number of vaccine doses from
the previously recommended
dosage of five to four injections.
A course of four doses of
HDCV or PCECV are injected
intramuscularly. The first dose
should be administered as
soon as possible after exposure
(Day 0). Additional doses then
should be administered on
days 3, 7 and 14 after the first
vaccination. Also administered
is rabies immune globulin
(RIG) by infiltrating the dose
into and around the wound.
Health officials say the
vaccine when administered
properly and on time, is highly
effective in preventing human
rabies.
Each year, scientists from
see Rabies > page 13
There is some good news
on the horizon, the number of
from more than 100 annually
at the turn of the century to
one or two per year in the
In the past year, Goochland
County Public Schools has
formed a countywide STEM
committee. STEM stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics. It is a nationwide
initiative to prepare our
students for the 21st century by
emphasizing skills in these areas.
Each day, Goochland County
students participate in activities
that promote these areas.
On April 26 teachers at
Goochland Elementary got all
steamed up by bringing everything
together in a one-day project
called Full STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts
Created and coordinated by the
Enrichment Resource Teacher,
Lisa Brown, all students, kindergarten
through fifth grade, were
involved in grade-level appropriate
design briefs that used community-building
as a common
thread.
The Standards of Learning
small group completed its drawing
parent volunteers assisted the
children by procuring the needed
materials from our recycling area.
At the end of the activity, all of the
classes brought their communities
Contributed Report
Last year the nation’s food
banks helped feed 37 million
Americans, according to
FeedingAmerica.org. But 49
million Americans suffered
from hunger that year.
Young Farmers with
the Virginia Farm Bureau
Federation are doing their part
through the Fresh Foods for
Virginians initiative.
“This partnership between
produce farmers and Virginia
food banks helped bring 1.2
million pounds of fresh produce
into food banks last year,”
said Bob Harris, a Pittsylvania
County farmer and chairman
of the VFBF Young Farmers
Committee.
The initiative helped participating
farmers find ways to
help their local food banks,
earn tax incentives for donating
products and in some cases
sell some of their produce.
The VFBF Young Farmers
partnered with the Federation
of Virginia Food Banks in
2011. Harris said most of the
produce that was donated
or gleaned came from a few
farms near urban areas. He’d
like to see more farms participate
this year. The Young
Farmers Committee received
a $500 grant in February from
the American Farm Bureau
Contributed Photo
at the PTA meeting that night.
Principal Tina McCay said “the
day was a success!
Our students were totally
engaged in learning and smiling
throughout the process. We can’t
wait until next year’s Full STEAM
Ahead Day.”
Young farmers tackle Virginia’s hunger challenge
Federation’s Harvest for All
program for being one of the
most innovative state hunger
programs among state Farm
Bureaus nationwide.
The Harvest for All program
raised $556,278 and
donated more than 10 million
pounds of food to hungry
Americans last year. Harris
noted that financial donations
are also welcome, but farmers
are in the unique position of
being able to donate the fresh
fruits and vegetables that food
banks may find challenging to
acquire.
“We’ll partner with the
Food Banks any way we can,”
he said.

Aggressive Saints
tame Cougars in
LIS championship
The St. Catherine softball
team provided ample evidence
to the old belief that it is difficult
to beat a team three times
in a single season. After twice
losing to rival Collegiate during
the regular season, the Saints
utilized aggressive play to take
advantage of Cougar miscues
and win the LIS championship
for the second straight
year, 7-3.
Collegiate committed all
four of their errors in the first
two innings which contributed
to a 4-0 St. Catherine lead that
proved too much to overcome.
“That’s not typical of
the way we played this year,”
said Collegiate coach Robbie
Turner. “Our defense is what
keeps us in games and we’ve
been out-hit several times this
year and won.
St. Catherine sophomore
pitcher Molly Phillips did her
part in holding the Cougars in
check with a one-hit complete
game effort.
“She has great movement
on the ball and when she hits
her target she’s almost unhittable,”
said Saints’ coach Tara
DiGiacomo.
pitcher Katie Mccauley, forcing
her from the game in the top of
the third inning.
“They jumped all over Katie
and I think everyone was hitting
her and hitting her hard,”
DiGiacomo said.
Sophomore Emily Shinn
came on in relief and did a
good job of quieting the Saints
but the Cougar pair gave up 13
hits in the game.
On offense, Phillips was
also productive at the plate
and got things going from
the beginning with a leadoff
single to left-center. She
advanced on a sacrifice bunt
from Anne Szymendera. Mary
Kate Crook’s shot to second
turned into a throwing error
that allowed Phillips to score.
Collegiate intentionally
walked powerful Saints batter
Raven Baytops and a bobbled
shot to second from Lale
Herguner loaded the bags.
“The girls were just ready,”
DiGiacomo said. “They had
that fire in their eyes from the
first pitch and they were ready
to finish what we got started.”
Crook made the lead 2-0 on
a fly to center by Alex Chriscoe
At left: In an odd double-play, St. Catherine’s Raven Baytops
dives for second as Collegiate’s Emily Flippo, left, makes the
tag. However, the Saints’ Lale Herguner (8) pulls off the base
and gets caught in a rundown at first. Above: St. Catherine’s
Rachel Daniels (9) comes home for a score as the ball gets by
Collegiate catcher Mallory Knighton.
but base-running miscues
allowed Collegiate to escape
without further damage.
Baytops attempt to reach
third on the play resulted in a
run-down, pushing her back
to second where Herguner
already stood. Baytops was
tagged as she dove back to the
bag and Herguner pulled off to
prevent two runners being on
the base at the same time. As
a result, Herguner was caught
in a rundown between second
and first where she too was
tagged out.
In the top of the second the
Saints doubled their lead. Mia
Harris reached on a throwing
error and came home on a
single from Szymendera. After
being walked, Rachel Daniels
came in on a shot to short by
Crook.
Chriscoe made the lead
5-0 in the top of the third,
scoring on a double to left by
Harris.
Shinn’s presence on the
mound slowed, but did not
halt St. Catherine’s in the
fourth. The lead moved to 6-0
when a shot up the middle by
Herguner drove in Crook.
Collegiate took advantage
of a lapse from Phillips to
answer in the bottom of the
inning. Sarah Johnson led off
with the Cougars only hit of
the game then Phillips walked
both Mallory Knighton and
Caroline Cheatham to load the
bags with no outs.
Johnson scored on a wild
pitch. Next up, Phillips fielded
a bunt from Gabby Gelozin
but her throw to first was
off, allowing Knighton and
Cheatham to cut the Saints’
lead in half, 6-3.
“We knew they wouldn’t go
away. Collegiate never quits,”
said DiGiacomo. “I’ve seen it
happen before and you get a big
lump in your throat because
you know they’re going to keep
coming at you.”
But Phillips bounced back
to take down the order in the
final three innings to claim the
championship.
Baytops scored off a
Chriscoe single in the sixth to
create the final score.
Good news, bad news for Bulldogs baseball
Goochland wraps district
title, drops first JRD loss
By Jim Ridolphi
Special Correspondent
After a convincing win at
Randolph Henry earlier in the
week, the Goochland varsity
baseball game dropped its first
James River District game of the
season to visiting Buckingham
on Thursday.
The 5-4 loss stung the
Bulldogs after they learned they
had wrapped up the district
title no matter what happens
with the two remaining games.
“We may have been a little
complacent,” said Goochland
head coach Wes Farkas. “Amelia
lost and that sealed the district
for us, and we may have lost
some focus today.”
The loss came two days
after Austin Goyne pitched a
four-hitter in a 9-1 victory at
Randolph Henry. It was his fifth
win of the season. Goyne struck
out 11 as VMI coaches looked
on, checking on next year’s
signee. The one run recorded
by the Statesmen was the only
earned run against Goyne this
season and his ERA is 0.21.
Photos by Jim Ridolphi
Above: Buckingham’s Jesse Hickman, right, turns a double play in the fourth inning. The
Goochland runner is Chase Brookman (2). At right: Brookman got his first start after a two week
layoff due to an injury.
It was a different story
on Thursday as the Knights
touched up Bulldog starter
Chase Brookman for three first
inning hits that produced a
run. They added two more in
the third inning before Bulldog
bats caught up with Terrian
Ayers’a fastball in the bottom
of the fourth.
Scott Pearce led off with
a towering single and Trace
Nixon followed with a blooper
to right. The no out rally
Jake King fought off numerous
fastballs and finally earned
a walk to score Nixon.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of
the fifth, the Bulldogs rallied
and took a 4-3 lead when Josh
Driver sac flyed Pearce home.
The Knights responded
with a vengeance in the top of
the sixth, blasting two doubles
and a triple, scoring a run and
knotting the score at 4. They
added the go ahead run on a
double by J. Edwards.
“In hindsight, I may have
left (Brookman) in a pitch or
two too long,” Farkas said. “He
had just a four pitch inning so
I thought he was good.”
Brookman was making his
first appearance on the mound
since tweaking a hamstring
two weeks ago. He appeared to
be strong and fully recouped
from the injury.
“He threw some good
pitches,” Farkas said. “He needs
to get his endurance back.”
Ayers got the win after some
shaky innings, but Knights’
coach Mike Jones felt his starter
is finding his control just in
time for the playoffs.
“He’s been coming on
slowly this year,” Jones said.
“He’s had some control problems
in the past, but he was on
top of his game tonight.”
The coach said this is just
the type of game he expects
from his squad. “This was a
well played game from both
teams,” Jones said. “I’m proud
of the way my guys battled and
played with effort. We knew we
had to come down here and
17
play solid to beat these guys,
and, fortunately, we were able
to do that.”
The Bulldogs face Bluestone
and Amelia to cap off the regular
season and begin tournament
play next Monday. They
will host the number eight seed
in the opening round.
