Dear Friends:
I am so lucky to be joining your community as the new executive director of
the Flynn. I have long admired the Flynn for the vibrancy of its multidisciplinary
presentations, expansive education and outreach programs, and support for local
and regional artists. This season is a truly wonderful array of iconic figures in
dance, theater, and music, a cornucopia of culturally specific events, fun-filled
family and holiday programs, and of course Broadway and a few pop sensations.
All of this is not possible without a very dedicated staff and the extraordinary support of members, trustees,
donors, volunteers, government, foundation, and corporate funding partners, and you, our audience. The Flynn
serves annually nearly 200,000 community members through our events and programs. Education programs will
again reach more than 40,000 students state-wide through our Student Matinees, as well as year-round classes,
workshops, and summer camps.
In the live performing arts, we come together to share, witness, and celebrate. The role artists play in creating
metaphor, defining space (real and imagined), commemorating losses and victories, and articulating the
unconscious is profound. Artists and arts organizations often create a safe space for unsafe ideas—a very
necessary role in our profane world. The arts’ intellectual, creative, and social capital contributions can never
be underestimated. There can be no creative economy without the arts.
Children often find their first voice through cultural expression. I know I did. Growing up in Chicago, a school
matinee performance of the Alvin Ailey Company changed the course of my life and is truly the reason I am here Paper
at the Flynn today.
But you know all of this, as I am preaching to the Flynn Recycled

At Your Service: The House Manager is responsible for
the overall front-of-house operation. A Flynn Spirit (dressed
in white and black) can direct patrons who have questions
or concerns to this Flynn representative.
Late Arrivals: Late arrivals will not be seated until
a suitable break in the performance, and at the
discretion of the house manager.
Re-entering the Building: Patrons who leave the
building during the performance (including intermission)
must show their ticket stubs when re-entering.
Children: Any child one year old or older attending
a performance must have a ticket and a separate seat.
Infants (children 12 months and under) are welcome
at Flynn Family events and performances specifically
geared to children and will be admitted free of charge.
If an infant or young child is disrupting a performance, the
Flynn reserves the right to ask a parent to sit with the child
in the rear of the theater or, if need be, to leave the hall.
Blocking Aisles: Fire safety codes prohibit the
blocking of aisles. Ushers can store your personal
belongings safely and securely during performances.

Refreshments: No food or beverages are allowed inside
the theater with the exception of bottled water purchased
at the Flynn concession stand.
Restrooms: Restrooms are located on the lower
level in the rear of the theater, reached by both
the left and right staircases. A wheelchair-accessible
restroom is available on the main floor off the lobby.
Cameras, Tape Recorders, Pagers, Cell Phones, &
Watches: Cameras and tape recorders may not be used
during any performance. Artist contracts require violators to
be removed from the theater and be liable for damages or
injury. Audible paging devices, cell phones, and watches
must be turned off during performances. Please refrain
from opening such devices as well, as light can provide
a disturbance to other patrons during a performance.
Fragrances: Please be judicious in your use of perfumes
and fragrances when coming to the theater, as an increasing
number of people have allergies to scents. If the perfume
of another patron disturbs you, please notify an usher
or the house manager and we will attempt to relocate
you to another seat.
Smoking: The Flynn Center is a smoke-free building.

A Leader in Arts Education
The arts improve the quality of pre-school through graduate education, so the Flynn offers a range of
valuable programs designed to help teachers and schools adopt new ways to use the arts to achieve their
classroom goals.
School Programs
The Student Matinee Series annually offers
more than 30 quality performances tied to Vermont’s
curricular Standards of Learning, seen by as many
as 45,000 schoolchildren in grades PreK-12.
Matinee Companion Workshops in schools help
students prepare for and further engage with the meaning of the performances
they’ll see onstage.
“Words Come Alive” Workshops in schools help teachers learn how
to strengthen students’ curricular engagement and comprehension through
specially developed dance to movement, and drama activities. Publications
of techniques and lesson plans available.
Partnerships with school districts in the region allow for extended professional development for
teachers, making the performing arts an integral part of educational life. Formal partnerships exist
between the Flynn and Chittenden South Supervisory Union and the Burlington School District through
the Kennedy Center’s prestigious Partners in Education program. The Flynn is a strategic partner of
Burlington’s Integrated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler
School. Flynn teaching artists are also working closely
with teachers in the Grand Isle Supervisory Union this
school year as well as East Montpelier Elementary School,
The Edge Academy, and Robinson Elementary School.
Teacher Workshops and Graduate Courses,
held in collaboration with the Champlain Valley
Educator Development Center and St. Michael’s
College, support educators and introduce ways to integrate the performing arts into class work.
The Vermont Young Playwrights Program brings professional playwrights into middle and high
schools where students are guided in developing original 10-minute plays. At the Flynn’s state-wide
festival in May, two winning plays from each school are celebrated in readings by professional actors
and directors from Vermont Stage Company.

Meeting Community Needs
The Flynn partners with many area institutions and social service organizations to maximize the positive
impact of visiting artists, to create synergies between related missions, and to bring the arts to bear on
community issues. The Flynn Center reaches out to meet important community needs in a variety of ways:
The PACT (Providing Accessible Community Tickets) Program partners with more than 50
Vermont social service agencies annually to make performances and activities accessible and affordable
to nearly 2,000 people who might otherwise be unable to enjoy the arts. The agencies involved in the
program serve over 20,000 constituents from a wide range of backgrounds. At-risk youth are served by
agencies such as Boys and Girls Club, Spectrum Youth and Family Services, the Underground Teen
Center, and others; homeless and food-insecure social service agencies include Committee on
Temporary Shelter (COTS), Burlington Emergency Shelter, and the Burlington Housing Authority; VSA
Arts, The Howard Center, and the Vermont Council for the Blind all serve area residents with disabilities;
other agencies provide support for a wide range of clients including senior citizens, minority students,
cancer survivors, single parents, and a host of other social services. Each year the PACT Program tries
to reach out to new community agencies to increase the reach and availability of these vouchers.
Approximately 15 percent of Student Matinee Series tickets are provided at no cost,
based on student need.
Scholarships are made available to students in the FlynnArts performing arts education program,
making participation possible for a wide range of students.
Partnerships with the University of Vermont and Saint Michael’s College provide students,
faculty, and staff with affordable access to Flynn performances and educational programs that are
integrated into the curriculum across the academic spectrum. These partnerships also serve to make
Flynn performances and other events an integral part of students’ social life and college experience.
The Flynn Center is pleased to be an arts education partner with these vital community
organizations: the King Street Youth Center, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Shelburne Farms,
Burlington City Arts, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain,
Rokeby Museum, UVM, Vermont Public Radio, and Very Special Arts of Vermont.
Supporting Artists
The Flynn Center encourages the creative development of new work by providing artists with in-kind and/
or direct financial assistance. Flynn support for artists and the creative process takes many different forms.
Artist Development Projects provide nationally recognized performing artists the use of Flynn
Center facilities, housing, technical and administrative support, and time to explore new works.
The Flynn co-commissions new works by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists and
supports the development of new work by Vermont artists, including Jane Comfort and Company’s
Faith Healing, and a co-commission with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra for a new work by Jennifer
Higdon, winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
The bi-annual New Arts Space Assistance (NASA) Grant provides Vermont artists or groups
with the opportunity to develop, rehearse, and perform new work at the Flynn. Previous awardees
include Ellen Smith Ahern, Jen Berger, Kathryn Blume, Selene Colburn, Margot Lasher, Joy Madden,
Hanna Satterlee, Rachel Siegel, and Heat & Hot Water Productions.
This year, poet/performer/writer Muhammad Muwakil, from Trinidad, will be in Burlington for four
weeks, with a Flynn-sponsored middle school residency, college classroom visits, FlynnArts classes,
and a teacher training workshop planned, in addition to performances.

Last season the Flynn’s Board of Directors initiated a capital campaign to honor Andrea Rogers’ retirement
as the Flynn’s founding executive director. The campaign entitled Andrea’s Legacy Fund was chaired

Over many years, the Flynn has sustained the excellence of
its programs and provided deeper artistic experiences for a
broadening community of patrons while meeting financial
goals. In recognition of its accomplishments, the Flynn
is frequently awarded some of the most substantial and
prestigious grants and accolades available. The following
selection of honors and awards are testament to that success:
The Ford Foundation and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation honored the Flynn with prestigious millennial
grants. These foundations independently selected the Flynn as a national arts leader, one whose future they wanted
to help secure. We’re proud to note that the Flynn was the only organization selected by both institutions.
The Flynn received the Arts Presenters/MetLife Foundation Award for Innovation in Arts Access
recognizing the Flynn for its services to the disability community and for spearheading a collaboration with other
regional presenters to create an unprecedented, seven-week tour of the physically integrated AXIS Dance Company.
The Flynn received the 2007 Outstanding Historic American Theatre Award at the national conference
of the League of Historic American Theatres for being “a compelling example of contemporary programming
excellence in a beautifully renovated space that thoughtfully engages its community and an inspiration to other
small cities.”
The National Endowment for the Arts provides major funding for Flynn performances, educational
residencies, and the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. NEA programs include the NEA Jazz Masters on Tour.
The New England Foundation for the Arts provides essential support through such programs as the
National Dance Project, New England States Touring, Expeditions, and Meet-the-Composer. NEFA itself receives
funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation, Atria Group, Inc., the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Fund, and the six state arts agencies of New England.
The National Performance Network provides support for artist residencies and creation of new works.

There are many ways to participate as a Flynn volunteer. To learn more, call the Flynn Center
administrative offices at 802-652-4500.
Flynn Spirits are a group of 375 volunteers who work as ushers, ticket takers, concessionaires, and support
personnel for all public events held at the Flynn Center. Spirits also work on benefit events, educational
programs, office mailings, and other Flynn projects. Annual registration is in July and August.
Flynn Ambassadors assist the Flynn with public relations, membership recruitment, special benefit
events, and other service activities.
Special Event and Office Volunteers help to plan and staff special events or work in our offices in
Education, Development, and other departments.
These individuals have volunteered for 10 or more years as ushers, house captains,

The Ballet School of Vermont is proud to include the
AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE ® National Training Curriculum,
a breakthrough 8 level program that combines high
quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and
child development. The ABT ® National Training Curriculum
consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based
guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet
training to dance students of all ages and skill levels.
Primary through Level 3 will be taught by ABT ® Certified
Teacher, Maryellen Vickery, who has successfully completed
the ABT ® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through
Level 3 of the ABT ® National Training Curriculum.

The Flynn has been at the center of Vermont’s
cultural landscape for more than 80 years—from
its earliest days as a vaudeville house through
five decades as a premier movie theater to its
present incarnation as an acclaimed performance
center and arts education organization. Today, the
Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is recognized
internationally for its significant artistic, educational,
and community outreach activities; superb technical
capacity; beautiful ambiance; historic setting; and world-class presentations. We proudly celebrate a rich
history of connecting our community with the arts.
From “Entertainment Palace”
to Premier Performing Arts Venue
The main theater—previously called the Flynn Theatre and now
the centerpiece of the Flynn Center—was built in 1930 by Burlington
businessman John J. Flynn as the city’s newest and largest “entertainment
palace.” With the largest proscenium in the state, a sophisticated “fly”
system for set changes, sloped floor seating, excellent acoustics, and
a central downtown location, the theater was originally designed for
vaudeville but shifted quickly and effortlessly to film as “talkies” became
the rage. The Flynn then operated as a movie theater for nearly 50 years.
With the Flynn’s movie business in decline in the 1970s, Burlington’s
community theater group, Lyric Theatre, rediscovered the theater’s live
performance capacity. Lyric members subsequently helped spearhead
a group of interested citizens who raised money to purchase and begin restoring the Flynn. The theater
reopened in 1981 as the Flynn Theatre for the Performing Arts. Throughout the 1980s, efforts focused on
continued restoration to provide a well-managed, comfortable home for the performing arts; establishment
and steady growth of the Flynn MainStage Series; and making the theater available to Vermont artists for
special projects.

The late 1980s and the 1990s witnessed
significant expansion of the Flynn’s educational
programming. The Student Matinee Series was
inaugurated, teacher training workshops were
developed, and the first of what was to become
many Flynn partnerships with local schools and
school systems was initiated with Burlington’s
Wheeler Elementary School.
During this time, the Flynn also made significant forays into logistical and financial support of artistic
development, introducing an intimate On-Stage Series of performances and a summer artist development
project to work with national artists in the creation of new works.

A New Flynn for a New Century

Following 10 years of strategic planning and
development throughout the 1990s, the Flynn
concluded a multi-phased expansion and renovation
project began in 1994 and completed in 2000,
and a comprehensive performing arts complex
—renamed the Flynn Center for the Performing
Arts—was born. The Flynn now incorporates two
performance spaces—the original theater, fully
restored to its Art Deco splendor, and FlynnSpace,
our intimate performance setting.
The center also includes education and
dance studios housing year-round classes
in music, theater, and dance for children,
teens, and adults; a visual arts gallery;
and administrative offices.
In 2005-06, the Flynn celebrated its
25/75-year anniversary and concluded
a $6 million endowment campaign setting the stage for building the
endowment through bequests and other planned gifts.
The Flynn received the 2007 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award as
"a compelling example of contemporary programming excellence in
a beautifully renovated space that thoughtfully engages its community… an inspiration to other cities."
The Flynn Today
In 2010, Founding Executive
Director Andrea Rogers
retired, and in her honor, the Board of Directors announced
Andrea’s Legacy Fund, which will be used to protect and
maintain the Flynn’s extraordinary performing arts and
education programs for years to come.
Now, with John Killacky at the helm, the Flynn begins a new
era, embarking on new directions with a concrete foundation.
