Dear Members and Friends,
Happy New Year! As the Dragon Year flies in, may it usher for you and your
family, good health and much prosperity!
The season of giving and the spirit of sharing is at an all-time high. One such
example was the successful Lady Helm Race, in support of the Breast Cancer
Foundation. It was a good day for the ladies, thanks to all participating yachts,
sponsors and donors.
On 3 March, we will have an encore, this time, in conjunction with International
Women’s Day and our Boaters’ & Members’ Night. Bring along your family and
join us for a great afternoon of sailing, followed by prize-giving, and a relaxed evening of live music and
casual dining.
Congratulations to all the Raffles Marina members who participated in the recent Raja Muda Selangor
International Regatta and King's Cup. It’s wonderful to see this growing regional participation in premier
racing regattas.
Just around the corner is Singapore Sailing’s 18th Singapore Straits Regatta (26-31 January), an event
that is fast becoming the titular Singapore Cup for Sailing.
To keep you connected to what’s happening at the Club, we are introducing a regular email to all
members, highlighting events / activities with links to information that may interest you. We hope to
launch it in the next month. To fully benefit from this, please ensure we have your current email address.
Do update Cecilia from our membership department.
Our year-end Phuket Cruise 2011 called on our nautical friends in Pangkor, Penang, Langkawi, Lipe,
Krabi and Phuket and had a wonderful time sailing and socialising at some of the best cruising destinations
in the world.
Following a fun filled New Year’s Eve family party, the social calendar for the weeks ahead is packed with
activities. First up are our Chinese New Year Celebrations. The festive lineup begins with Shou Gong Yan
from now until 20 January and includes Lo Hei feasts, Reunion Dinners, and Chinese New Year takeaways.
On 14 February, love is in the air as Valentine’s Day rolls around. Marina Bistro has made it easy this
year with a specially arranged dinner for two menu, at $98++. There is even a chance to win a two-nights,
stay at the Raffles Marina.
In order to comply with new MAS standards for data security, in December 2011, Diners Club commenced
replacing RML’s current magnetic strip-based cards with chip-based cards. This exercise should be hassle-free
with just an exchange of card. We are keen to hear of any problems that may have arisen and are happy
to assist if indeed this has been your experience.
Raffles Marina values the environment and would like to do our part by implementing a recycling
scheme. Three recycling bins are located at the Marina’s Post A before the slipway and all are encouraged
to use these bins for waste disposal. A little goes a long way, so remember to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Finally, I am delighted to announce that Raffles Marina is proud to partner Singapore Sailing Federation,
as the selected venue for their Gala Fund Raising Dinner on 31 March. More details will follow, but please
mark your diaries for this special night.
I look forward to seeing you around your club!
A Royal
Sojourn
Ireland’s castle hotels are perfect for those
who want to enjoy a holiday that’s truly fit
for kings and queens.
By Balvinder Sandhu

Make your fairy tale dreams of staying in a castle come true with these regal establishments that have
generously opened themselves up to the world of hospitality. Here’s a pick of Ireland’s most majestic
castle staycations.
Ashford Castle
Located in Mayo, this one-time estate of the Guinness
family has been around since 1228. It first opened as a
hotel in 1939, and after being purchased by a group of Irish
American investors in 1985, it came under the ownership
of Galway entrepreneur and hotelier Gerry Barrett in 2008.
All of the castle’s 83 rooms retain their original features
yet come equipped with modern amenities. Choose from
Corrib Room, Deluxe Room, state room or suite. Get the
ultimate in pampering at one of the spa treatment rooms.
For outdoor activities, there’s fishing, golf, lake cruising,
falconry, clay pigeon and archery to choose from.
There are plenty of dining options too, all of which indulge in
creative cooking, inspired use of seasonal ingredients as well as an
innovative menu. Your options include George V (classic dining),
Drawing Room (informal lunch / dinner and afternoon tea), Cullens
(bistro-style menu) or the cocktail bar for drinks.
From *€175 / S$305 per night for a Corrib double room, with full Irish breakfast.
Dromoland Castle
With a history stretching back to the fifth
century, this castle was originally the ancestral
home of one of the few families of Gaelic
royalty, direct descendants of Brian Boru, the
High King of Ireland.
Located in Clare, with easy access from
Shannon Airport, Dromoland Castle sits on
expansive grounds, which includes a championship
golf course and a beautiful lake. Book yourself
into a Deluxe Room, a Queen Anne Room, a state room
or suite, better yet, a room with a lake view, and you’ll
experience the excellent comfort and hospitality that
Dromoland has to offer.
Old-world elegance is apparent throughout the
property, but modern amenities are aplenty too. The Earl
of Thomond is an award-winning fine dining restaurant.
Don’t miss the Cocktail Bar – formerly the castle library – where you can sit by a gently
burning fire and savour your drink. Or just unwind at the spa or the indoor heated pool.
The adventurous type can try activities such as falconry, clay shooting, horse riding,
fishing and archery. There’s also the championship golf course, which was designed by
Irish golfing legend, J.B. Carr, and golf course architect, Ron Kirby. You are welcome to
explore the estate on your own. Who knows what surprises are in store for you.
From *€98 / S$171 per night for special bed and breakfast packages.
The Green
Last October, the Nature Society of Singapore (NSS) submitted a
proposal The Green Corridor: A Proposal To Keep The Railway Lands As
A Continuous Green Corridor to the relevant decision makers. That
was in response to the then pending relocation of the KTM railway
service from Tanjong Pagar to Woodlands as part of the agreement
between the Singapore and Malaysian governments.
The proposal was developed in collaboration with representatives
from various stakeholders including the Singapore Heritage Society,
architects and cycling groups. It covers the combined length of the
Tanjong Pagar-Woodlands Line and the disused Jurong Line from Teban
Gardens to Clementi. Jurong Line was abandoned due to disuse for about
20 years.
From the numerous nature walks and birdwatching excursions in the
past, NSS has known that the KTM Railway Lands provide a refuge for flora
and fauna due to their myriad landscapes of secondary forest, grasslands,
canals, streams and marshlands. Rural practices such as small-scale
agriculture have also been observed, especially along the Jurong Line.
It had occurred to us that this extensive land can form an exceptional
green corridor – connecting various green areas from north to south and
even people and neighbourhoods.
Corridor
By Leong Kwok Peng, Vice President, Nature Society (Singapore)

A Grand Spine To Connect Green Spaces Together
Map A (on the right) shows the Railway Lands superimposed
with a portion of the National Parks Board (NParks) Park
Connector System. With an estimated combined length of
40 kilometres, the Green Corridor would add 40% to the
existing 100 kilometres of NParks Park Connector System,
whilst providing the Park Connector System with a Grand
Spine. All along its length, the tracks pass directly through
or intersect with existing parks and park connectors, which
fall into six main areas.
1. Southern Sector
In the South, the Railway Lands skirt through woodlands
of various sizes in Portsdown, Alexandra and Bukit Merah.
They can potentially link the Southern Ridges with the
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Located along part of the Ayer
Rajah Expressway, the Railway Lands can be a green cycling
route into the City, where already they form a welcome
green buffer to adjacent light factories.
Central Catchment Area
Clementi Woodlands
one North Park
Botanical Gardens
Southern Ridges
2. Clementi Woodlands
Heading north, the Railway Lands enter an area of
Labrador Park
significant secondary growth forest known as Clementi
Woodlands. This large patch of green is also intersected by the defunct Jurong Line which has
developed unique micro-climates that have become sanctuaries for many rare plants such as giant
tree ferns. In the woodland areas, rare birds such as the Buffy Fish Owl and Changeable Hawk Eagle
have been recorded.
3. Jurong Line
The Jurong Line emerges from the Clementi Woodlands at Sunset Way, crossing the Ulu Pandan
Canal via a majestic cast iron truss bridge. It continues in an unbroken green stretch all the way to
Teban Gardens. Areas adjacent to it have been adopted by nearby residents for use as fruit farms
and vegetable patches, providing an example of what can be encouraged along other areas of the
Railway Lands near housing estates.
4. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
The Railway Lands skirt the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve for a 2-kilometre stretch along Upper Bukit
Timah area. The Green Corridor could be a very convenient way of accessing these areas and can
very simply be converted into a nature trail.
5. Bukit Panjang / Chua Chu Kang / Pang Sua
Beyond the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, several Park Connectors (Hillview, Bukit Panjang, Chua Chu
Kang and Pang Sua) run parallel to the Railway Lands. Combining these will allow for a wider Linear
Park to be established.
6. Kranji / Mandai Mangrove and Mudflats
Finally in the North, the Railway Lands in Kranji can form part of a greater wetlands area, connecting
Mandai Kechil (adjacent to the Customs House), Sungei Mandai and the coastal strip of Mandai
Mangroves and Mudflats. It was also an area formerly part of the old Kranji Nature Reserve that was
degazetted in 1968. This coastal strip between the railway line and the sea consists of extensive
areas of mangroves and intertidal mudflats. Rich in biodiversity, it can potentially be part of the
greater Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve.
12
Connecting Nature, People, Work and Home
The proposed Green Corridor will not only make it possible to hike from
the wetlands in Kranji to rainforests in Bukit Timah and the hilltops of
Henderson through a continuous nature trail, it is also important for
preserving our natural heritage by acting as a connector for flora and fauna
movement across the island. It will, to some extent, mitigate the effects of
the fragmentation of our nature reserves.
This Green Corridor can also connect people. Singapore has developed
around the Railway Lands, which are immediately at the doorstep of major
population centres. It has the potential to directly or almost directly serve
1.2 million people living in estates along the entire stretch of railway. Our
proposal suggests a cycling path and a pedestrian path on either side of the
railway tracks.
Of course the Green Corridor is a natural spot for conducting all forms of
sports and recreational activities – the length of the main track is roughly
that of a marathon. The continuous length of the Green Corridor can host
various forms of long distance running or cycling activities without the
need for troublesome road closures.
Preserving History
The railway line serves as a physical reminder
of Singapore and Malaysia’s earlier pre-1965
borderless connections. The whole stretch of
the railway line can be turned into an outdoor
‘museum’ with ‘walking commentary’. Because
of its linearity, points of historical interests can
be planned along the route to educate the
public about life in the 50s, 60s and up to the 70s.
The tracks and auxiliary items such as remaining
shacks, traffic signals and train stations along
the track are ideal points of interests.
The most obvious is the Tanjong Pagar
Railway Station. This 1920s architectural gem
is an obvious candidate for reuse as a hotel,
museum or integrated with any potential new
developments at the existing railway yards.
However, the agreement between Malaysia
and Singapore does not allow the preservation
of the tracks and auxiliary items. The only
structures that will be retained are Tanjong
Pagar and Bukit Timah Railway Station and the
span of tracks next to them, the railway bridges
across Bukit Timah and Upper Bukit Timah
Road and Ulu Pandan Canal. All other ‘hardware’
including the granite ballast will be returned to
Malaysia.
Railways Reused Elsewhere
It is not uncommon for abandoned railway lines
to be converted into parks and gardens. Indeed
we already have the example of Blair Plain in
Chinatown. Notable large-scale schemes in
other countries are the Promenade Plantee
in Paris, where from the late 1980s through
the mid-1990s, the city of Paris successfully
converted the 19th century elevated Viaduc
Daumesnil in the 12th arrondissement near
the Bastille, into a 3-mile linear pedestrian park.
Lavishly planted, with stairs and elevators for
access, and with retail spaces created in the
masonry arches below, it helped revitalise the
surrounding neighbourhood.
In New York, following lengthy but successful
lobbying by residents, the 13-mile long
Highline, which ran on an elevated deck along
Manhattan’s West Side, was bought over by New
York City from the Railroad Company in 2006.
Its first sections were open to the public early
this year. It was proven that such a project was
worth funding even in the difficult economic
situation of the time, as tax revenues from the
rejuvenation of the area would significantly
offset the costs of preserving the Line and
opening it to the public as a trail.
Conclusion
The case for the Green Corridor is also a case
against the partitioning of the narrow Railway
Lands into small chunks for the benefit of a
small number of private owners. As we have
demonstrated, keeping it as a continuous Green
Corridor can benefit a sizeable portion of, and
possibly all, Singaporeans. It makes economic
sense too, as values of nearby residential areas
and commercial activities will rise, creating
additional tax revenues.
All in all, there are so many compelling reasons to
preserve the Railway Lands as a Green Corridor.
It is a readymade Nature Corridor, recreational
space, eco-friendly transport route all rolled
into one – a valuable piece of ecological and
historical heritage that should be preserved for
future generations of Singaporeans.

through the gates to see 583
mostly in-water boats, including
173 new models, up from 139 in
2010, and the offerings of 425 exhibitors
from 25 countries. On display at the Vieux
Port were 181 boats over 20 m, 50 boats
over 30 m, and another 50 brokerage
boats from 22 to 46 m were at Port Pierre
nautically by navettes.
Warm sunshine still bathes the famous
Croisette beachfront promenade in
early September when espace Riviera
international film stars gather in May
three views of last year’s Monaco Yacht Show: two including
the 85m Cakewalk built at America’s derecktor Shipyard.
Vessels under 50m are often dwarfed in this company and
are increasingly shown at cannes
the rounds with assistants Cherie Tan
and Katarina Wahlstedt, and the lovely
Annie Lin, Singapore’s Horizon dealer,
was visiting after the sale of a Horizon
105 at Boat Asia, and another Horizon
120 immediately following this Cannes
event, run by Reed Expositions, also
the organiser of the Paris Boat Show
in December. Reed ran the original
Singapore International Boat Shows
of the late 80s and early 90s.
In fact, when Monaco Yacht Show gets
under way a week or so after Cannes
closes, many MYS visitors continue to
stay here or at other cities along the
French coast and commute to Monaco
in Alpes Maritimes trains. This is because
hotels in the principality are usually
choc-a-bloc and quite pricey, and this
method removes the hassles of traffic
congestion, parking and driving home
after cocktail parties.
The show is held in central Port
Hercule, although there are two other
harbours in the immediate vicinity, Port
de Fontvieille and Port de Cap D’Ail. This
event was launched in 1990 by Lord
Irvine Laidlaw, whose IIR Exhibitions
also ran Boat Asia in the late 90s.
Laidlaw, a Scot and keen offshore
sailor, has represented Hong Kong,
Singapore and Britain in various
yacht racing events worldwide, but
in the mid-2000s, when Monaco
Yacht Show was already a remarkable
success story, he sold to another
British group, Informa. MYS last year
attracted 28,000 visitors.
The line-up included Steven
Spielberg’s 86 m Oceanco Seven
Seas and the 85 m Cakewalk from
America’s Derecktor Shipyards. Amels
showed a high-volume 64 m called
Imagine, Lurssen, the 75 m Northern
Star, and Columbus Yachts, which
has never built a vessel before,
produced the 53.9 m Prima. Other
notables were the superfast 38 m
Shooting Star from multi-talented
designer Espen Oeino, and Danish
Yachts, the world’s largest luxury
catamaran in the 44 m Pendennis
Hemisphere, the highly innovative
45 m Big Fish built by McMullen and
Wing in New Zealand – CEO David
Porter told us the slightly larger Star
Fish will be launched in 2012. A 42
m built by Tansu Yachts of Turkey
arrived in Monaco as Nomade and
left as Bar Tender, having changed
hands during the four-day event.
Waiters must get huge tips here.
Informa Yacht Group hasn’t had
much luck with attempted Monaco
spin-off shows in Florida, Abu Dhabi
and Gold Coast Australia, and its
acquired Phuket Boat Show has been
held at three different times in the
last three years in the perennial quest
for better business. A start-up IYG
Singapore Yacht Show was tried at
One 15 Marina on Sentosa last year,
resulting in about ten rather assorted
boats on display. Singapore-based
expats were in Monaco promoting
the second edition of SYS, as were
others selling the 20 th Boat Asia,
a situation that is proving a little
confusing for potential European
and American exhibitors.
Julian Chang of Yantai Raffles
and co-owner of the 90 m Asean
Lady berthed at Raffles Marina, was
as usual prominent on the docks
and at social networking events in
Monaco. He has an 88 m project in
its early stages, and recently said
that he is looking at building Yantai
Raffles’ big white boats in Shanghai
instead of at their more industrial
yard at Yantai on the Bohai Gulf in
Shandong Province, because custom
owners would probably prefer to
visit Shanghai during 3- to 4-year
Night panorama of the cannes Festival de la Plaisance
periods. Also present were Jade
Yachts and Horizon again, Kingship
which is located up the Pearl River
from Hong Kong, and MCC-Marco
Polo single screw 45 m vessels built
at Cheoy Lee.
Lady Helm Race-In Support
Of The Breast Cancer
Foundation
It was the ladies who stole the limelight at the Lady Helm Race on
Saturday, 15 October 2011. From 2pm to 3.30pm, a total of 12 yachts
raced in a Round The Cans format with dual scoring in the IRC and
Club Handicap (CH) categories. Joining in the excitement was 20 Breast
Cancer Foundation (BCF) members (all cancer survivors). Some sailed
together with our members while others were either on the committee
boat or spectators. Congratulations to Foxy Lady 5 and O’Blue Eyes for
taking top spots in the IRC and CH categories respectively.
From noon to 6pm, the Club was a hive of activity. For a small
donation, people could take the world’s first electric super car
(TESLA) for a spin, while others could experience the onboard thrill
of a SEALEGS 7.1m RIB. The Wine Vault had a special wine sale. All
proceeds from these activities went towards the BCF, with additional
funds from BCF product sales and donations from sailors. The event
raised over $6,100 for the BCF.
Special thanks to our generous sponsors – CT Venture, The Wine
Vault, Luminox, evHUB, Azurea, XSP and North Sails.
Raffles Marina New Year’s

Eve Countdown Dinner & Party 2011

All Hands
on deck!
Mir at ASL Shipyard
Mir undergoes massive repairs to her deck
to prepare for a better future full of hope and
continued conservation work in remote island
communities. By Abigail Alling
The time had come again for
our crew to head into another
dry-dock – this time to replace
the entire deck of our beloved
101-year old vessel Mir. This daunting
task has been on our minds for one
year ever since we returned to Raffles
Marina after the Red Sea / Indian
Ocean Voyage.
During that adventure on the high
seas, we discovered that the old deck
was in trouble. With rain, it leaked;
but with waves rolling over the deck,
it poured. So the inevitable had to
happen. In the next six months we will
replace the old wooden deck with a
steel deck below and teak deck above.
That means replacing all hatches
and cowl vents, re-fitting masts and
rigging, and reconfiguring deck boxes
and accessories.
As a charity organisation, we knew
we had a chance to accomplish this
Herculean feat when our friends at Seagull
Marine Pte Ltd started the project by
giving us overall assistance and steel
for the deck. With this generous offer
and the ongoing support from friends
nautique
20
at Raffles Marina and Deepblue Pte Ltd,
the last major piece of the puzzle fell
into place when a good friend from
the shipping business secured the
help of ASL Shipyard on our behalf.
We dry-docked our last ship at this
impressive industrial shipyard in 2001,
and were thrilled to learn that we
could do this project at their dockyard
as well as have the support of their
professional team to install the deck.
On the heels of this wonderful news,
the impossible happened – our Maltese
friend, Joe Mallia, agreed to join us for
five months to oversee the teak deck
construction. Wow! With our network
of Singapore friends and supporters
cheering us onwards, a space to do
the work at ASL Shipyard, and the
steel deck and woodworking now in
capable hands, Captain Mark flew into
motion organising not only our own
crew but a bright-eyed team of nine
that jumped in on the weekends to
help dismantle Mir. Before we knew
it, there was no turning back and Mir
seemed to dance at dock in anticipation
of her new makeover.
Mir’s arrival to ASL Shipyard
captain Mark removing the turnbuckles
the volunteer team helping to remove the deck of Mir
What a relief, what a gift! Finally,
you could see in all our eyes, that we
had a future again. Soon we would
sail the South China Sea onboard a
watertight lovely vessel. This time,
though, Mir will be entirely reborn
from her wooden deck into a new steel
/ teak millennium yacht – a blend of
old and new.
We are beaming from ear to ear
and wish to thank our dear friends at
Raffles Marina, and all of our sponsors
Teacher’s
Origin
This blended scotch whiskey, founded by William
Teacher, has come a long way since its conception
in a small grocery shop in Glasgow 175 years ago.
“Old Thorough’s” (Teacher’s nickname due to his
attention to detail) secret to his great blend lay in
four key areas: It contains no less than
65% malt whisky; it uses the uniquely
fully peated Ardmore Highland single malt;
it is matured in a combination of large
European oak puncheons, American
white oak ex Bourbon barrels and
also 19th century style Quarter Casks;
and lastly, it depends on the master
blender’s nose to denote when it
is ready. The round, smooth taste
of Teacher’s Origin is full of
crunchy ‘maltiness’. It’s like
biting into peanut brittle, then
toffee, then licorice.
$138++ per bottle; Daily.
