Form for subsystems Form for subsystems The Basic Subsystem Information form Chapter 20: Use Case Models (UML) 218 7 Click on the subsystem to which you want to connect the use cases. You can use the Basic Subsystem Information form to view and modify information about a subsystem. The sample form below shows information about the Sell Products activity in the sample use case diagram shown earlier in this chapter.
Use cases Use cases About use cases A use case represents a type of interaction that can occur between a subsystem and its users (called actors). A use case presents a static view of an interaction without showing the sequence of actions that comprise the interaction. You can use another type of model, such as an activity model, to show the dynamic behavior of a use case. Composite use cases A use case that incorporates one or more additional subsystems is called a composite use case. You can anchor additional use case diagrams to a composite use case to show the interactions for these subsystems. Communications between use cases and actors Extending and using use cases Instances of a use case and an actor may communicate with each other. These communications take the form of requests that an actor makes of a subsystem to perform a service and the responses that a use case makes to an actor when performing these services. Two use cases may be connected to each other through either an extends or a uses relationship. An extends relationship connects one use case to another that has the same behaviors, plus some of its own. In this type of relationship, the use case with the additional behaviors is said to extend the other use case. The relationship between one use case and another that extends it is similar to the relationship between a superclass and a subclass. A uses relationship connects one use case to another that includes its behaviors. The relationship between one use case and another that it uses is similar to the relationship between a process and a subprocess. Use case information In addition to its name, you can supply the following information for a use case: ■ Use case steps. A use case step is an action that causes the invocation of another use case.
