States States Creating a state Chapter 18: Statechart Models (UML) 198 A state represents a condition that describes an object for some finite amount of time. To create a state: 1 In the UML Statechart Diagram Tools tool folder, click and hold on the State tool. 2 Drag into your statechart diagram window and release the mouse button where you want to place the state graphic. 3 Type a name for the state. Then click on the window background to close the edit box.
State actions and internal transitions State actions and internal transitions Entry, do, and exit actions While an object is in a given state, it can cause or be affected by a variety of actions, including: ■ Entry actions, which are performed once immediately after the object transitions to the state ■ Do actions, which are ongoing actions performed while the object is in the state ■ Exit actions, which are performed once immediately before the object transitions out of the state Internal transitions An object can undergo an internal transition while in a given state. When an internal transition occurs, the exit and entry actions for the state are not invoked. An internal transition differs from a self-transition, in which the object actually exits and reenters the same state, thereby invoking the exit and entry actions for the state. Form for states Transitions To specify entry, do, and exit actions and internal transitions for a state, composite state, or a submachine state, you use the Basic State Information form.
