INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY AND BUSINESS NEWS
Sri Lanka leaves interest rates unchanged to support economic
expansion
Sri Lanka’s central bank left interest rates unchanged for a ninth straight month to
support growth as the global economy falters. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka retained
its reverse repurchase rate at 8.5 percent and the repurchase rate at 7 percent, the
Colombo-based bank said on its website yesterday. Six of seven economists in a
Bloomberg News survey predicted the decision. One expected a reduction of half a
percentage point. Asian nations from China to the Philippines have kept borrowing
costs on hold in recent weeks as Europe’s debt crisis and a struggling U.S.
Slowdown in the German economy is predicted
Eight leading European economic institutes have forecast a steep slowdown for
Germany's economy. The eight think-tanks make a twice-yearly aggregate forecast of
German growth. Six months ago they predicted 2% growth for next year, but they
have now cut that to 0.8%, blaming the debt crisis in the eurozone. Slow growth in
Germany makes it much harder for the rest of Europe to avoid a return to recession.
China's trade growth decelerates amid global slowdown
China's trade growth slowed in September, raising fresh concerns about the impact of
a global slowdown on its economy. Exports rose 17.1% in September, from a year
earlier, but fell from a 24.5% growth in the previous month. Meanwhile, imports rose
20.9%, down from a 30.2% jump in August. It left the trade surplus at $14.5bn
(£9.2bn). The data comes amid fears that a slowdown in the global economy will hurt
China's export-dependent growth.
Bank of Korea’s 2011 inflation likely to surpass 4% target limit
Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choong Soo said inflation is likely to exceed the central
bank’s 4 percent target limit this year and board members haven’t discussed cutting
interest rates. For the year of calendar 2011, probably inflation as measured by CPI
may turn out to be slightly over 4 percent.
US Economy shows signs of improvement
The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits dipped last week and
the U.S. trade deficit narrowed slightly in August, signs that point to a slight
strengthening in growth. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits edged down
1,000 to 404,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Just four weeks earlier,
new claims stood at 432,000.

INDIAN ECONOMY AND BUSINESS NEWS
Food inflation rises to 9.41pc
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today expressed concern over costlier vegetables,
fruits and milk pushing up food inflation to 9.41 per cent for the week ended
September 24, and said he has been in constant touch with the RBI on how to rein in
the rate of price rise. Food inflation, as measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI),
stood at 9.13 per cent in the previous week. It was 16.88 per cent in the
corresponding week of 2010. "Inflation is definitely a matter of concern. We shall
have to see how to bring it down to moderate level," Mukherjee told reporters here.
India industrial output growth seen at 5%
India's industrial output probably grew 5.0 percent in August from a year earlier, on a
favourable statistical base effect, despite successive interest rate rises slackening the
pace of growth, a poll showed. The forecasts from 25 analysts ranged from 3.6
percent to 7.0 percent, with a majority -- 16 of 25 -- looking for a reading of 5.0
percent or higher.
Gold rises by Rs 195, silver up by Rs 400 on festive demand
Both the precious metals, gold and silver, extended gains for the second straight
session today on sustained buying by stockists for the ongoing festive season amid
rising global trend. While gold added Rs 195 to Rs 27,115 per 10 grams, silver gained
Rs 400 to Rs 53,900 per kg. Trading sentiments bolstered after gold climbed the most
in a week in New York as falling dollar prompted investors to buy the precious metal
as an alternative asset.
RBI interest rate hike will hurt demand and pull down growth
Members of Corporate India have told the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that another
increase in interest rate would hurt demand and pull down growth. They also urged
the monetary authority to intervene in the currency market as a depreciating rupee
could stoke inflation. The views were spelt to RBI deputy governors and other senior
central bank officials by a team comprising Godrej group chairman Adi Godrej,
Hiranandani group managing director Niranjan Hiranandani, L&T chief financial officer
R Shankar Raman, Crisil MD Roopa Kudva, senior officials of credit rating agencies and
R Deora of the exporters' association FIEO, among others.
Agriculture Ministry cancels permits of pesticides Dursban 10G,
Nurella-D, Pride and Emamectin Benzoate for unethical practices
The Agriculture Ministry has cancelled the registration of pesticides Dursban 10G,
Nurella-D and Pride, manufactured by Dow AgroSciences India, and Emamectin

Benzoate, imported by Syngenta India, over 'unethical practices'. The order cancelling
the registration of Emamectin Benzoate was issued by the Agriculture Ministry on
Tuesday night and the order on the three Dow AgroSciences pesticides was issued on
Wednesday. "The significance of the twin orders is that they can neither be
manufactured, used, sold or imported into the country,'' a senior Agriculture Ministry
official told ET. "The orders have been issued just to show that there is a regulator
watching the activities of the firms,'' the official added.
