behavior of <strong>the</strong> op amp results <strong>in</strong> harmonics of <strong>the</strong> fundamental be<strong>in</strong>g produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> output.<br />

<strong>The</strong> noise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> output is ma<strong>in</strong>ly due to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>put noise of <strong>the</strong> op amp. All <strong>the</strong> harmonics<br />

and noise added toge<strong>the</strong>r make up 1% of <strong>the</strong> output signal.<br />

Two major reasons for distortion <strong>in</strong> an op amp are <strong>the</strong> limit on output voltage sw<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

slew rate. Typically an op amp must be operated at or below its recommended operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

conditions to realize low THD.<br />

11.3.15 Unity Ga<strong>in</strong> Bandwidth and Phase Marg<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>re are five parameters relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> frequency characteristics of <strong>the</strong> op amp that are<br />

likely to be encountered <strong>in</strong> Texas Instruments data sheets. <strong>The</strong>se are unity-ga<strong>in</strong> bandwidth<br />

(B 1), ga<strong>in</strong> bandwidth product (GBW), phase marg<strong>in</strong> at unity ga<strong>in</strong> (φ m), ga<strong>in</strong> marg<strong>in</strong><br />

(A m), and maximum output-sw<strong>in</strong>g bandwidth (B OM).<br />

Unity-ga<strong>in</strong> bandwidth (B 1) and ga<strong>in</strong> bandwidth product (GBW) are very similar. B 1 specifies<br />

<strong>the</strong> frequency at which A VD of <strong>the</strong> op amp is 1:<br />
