Gautama, whom do you meditate on as the Self?" "<strong>The</strong><br />

earth only, venerable King," he replied. "<strong>The</strong> Self you<br />

meditate on," said the king, "is the Vaisvanara Self<br />

called Pratishtha (the support). <strong>The</strong>refore you are<br />

supported by offspring and cattle and you eat food and<br />

see what is pleasing. Whoever thus meditates on the<br />

Vaisvanara Self eats food, sees what is pleasing and has<br />

in his family the glory of Brahman. That, however, is<br />

only the feet of the Self. Surely your feet would have<br />

withered away if you had not come to me."<br />
