Chapter III<br />

Adavaita Prakarana<br />

(<strong>The</strong> Chapter on Non-duality)<br />

<strong>The</strong> jiva, betaking himself to devotional worship, abides<br />

in the manifest Brahman. He thinks that before the<br />

creation all was of the same nature as the birthless<br />

Reality. <strong>The</strong>refore he is said to possess a narrow<br />

intellect.<br />

<strong>The</strong>refore I shall now describe Brahman, which is<br />

unborn, the same throughout and free from narrowness.<br />

From this one can understand that Brahman does not in<br />

reality pass into birth even in the slightest degree,<br />

though It appears to be manifest everywhere.<br />

Atman, which is like akasa (infinite space), is said to be<br />

manifested in the form of jivas, which may be likened<br />

to the akasas enclosed in pots. <strong>The</strong> bodies, also, are<br />

said to be manifested from Atman, just as a pot and the<br />

like are created out of akasa. As regards the<br />

manifestation of Atman this is the illustration.<br />
