face, I knew that what He was going to say would change my life<br />

forever. “First,” He began. “Get closer and closer to God. Every<br />

day get closer. Second, serve the world. Even if it means doing<br />

without something you want or something you think you need, give<br />

to humanity. Third, be happy. Give all your sadness, all your anger,<br />

all your bitterness to me. Give it to me and give it to Gangaji, but<br />

don’t keep it in your heart. You must be happy.”<br />

I sat there, in what felt like a far-off corner of the world, in a place<br />

so beautiful it could only exist in fairy tales, in the presence of a<br />

man who wanted nothing else from me than to be close to God.<br />

The tears streamed down my face, although they were not sad tears.<br />

They were the tears of having found truth.<br />

I could not have told you which was brighter — the morning sun<br />

blazing its way through the window or the light streaming from His<br />

eyes. I could not have said which was purer — the red rose, still<br />

covered with morning dew, which had just opened her petals to the<br />

world, or the love pouring forth from His heart. I could not have<br />

told you who was God — the formless Almighty Lord my Jewish<br />

upbringing had said to worship, or the small, simple man, draped in<br />

saffron robes, sitting across from me.<br />
