the most important keys when
figuring out where to set up in
brushy coyote country. The author
checks it often with a powderfilled
bottle.

hunters like Nichols.
"I've really Ixen having good
result-, with a raccoon-distress call."
notes Nichols. "I'll start out with
some distressed-coon clutter, then go
into a coyote yip to make it sound
like there's a fight."
In more dense tailing areas where
tlx- Ixush LS thick, trees are tall, and
tlx- land is steep, try starting off your
calling sequence with softer sounds.
In this habitat, coyotes can lx- surprisingly
close, and you don't want
to start Ls
go in aggressively and dunce educating
tlx-m. Go in subtly with
mouse, bird, or even gentle cottontail
sounds. You'll lx- surprised at how
far away a coyote's keen eats can
detect these slight sounds. Under tlxright
conditkms. it's nothing for a
coyote to hear tlx-sc- discrete noises
from 200 yards away, even farther—it
all depends on ilx- conditions and
terrain.
The Timing
Due to the varied habitat, one of the
greatest dulk-nges facing densecover
coyote caUers Ls how long to
slay on a stand. Not seeing mixh of
tlx- land you're calling leaves great
uncertainty as to how long you
sluxikl give a setup to work. As
Nichols points out. tlx-re arc- several
factors to lake into consideration.
"In open country, lx- it farmland or
dear-cuts in tlx- mountains, if there's
a great deal of publk: pressure. I'll
work it for a good -Ii5 minutes." If I
know tlx-re are coyotes in tlx- area. I
might even give ii longer tlun that."

call-shy coyotes can lake a while to
respond.
As with all predator hunting, you
never know what will happen on any
given setup. Init in areas ilut have
tx*cn hit hard by other hunters, you
want to call smart ami give tlx- animals
tinx- to respond. You may get a
coyote charging in within the first fewseconds.
or a wise one that lingers on
the outskirts for several minutes. Give
those wive dogs time to comc in, otherwise
you won't even know they're
around.
"In tight timlx-r, I'll only stay 1$ lo
20 minutes on stand," shares Nichols.

respond quickly if they are

If concentrating efforts on timlx-n-d
ridges and amid brushy draws and
creek bottoms, call ami move. If nothing
comes in after 15 minutes, rather
than calling kinder, pick up aixl go to
the next spot. It's usually more productive
to cover ground with your

situations, rather than covering ground
with loud calls.

On a recent coyote hunt, not far
from my home. Nichols got situated
on tlx- edge of a mountain nx-admv,
surrounded by thick brush and tall
evergreens. He took the high point,
and seconds after delivering a round
of raccoon distress sounds and a quick
coyote yip. saw two coyotes bust out
of ilx- brush. They tore off right at
him. He dropped tlx- first coyote with
a well-placed shot, then stopped tlxsecond
ck)g with quick yip and
dropped him on the spot.
When it comes to busting brush
country coyotes in tlx- Pacific
Northwest (or any dense-cover country).
pay attention to details. Hunting
these coyotes is not unlike hunting
those- living in the brushy farmlands of
the Eastern U.S.. even those in parts of
Canada and Alaska. It's all alxwi
details, solid setups, smart calling, and
patience.
