100% of servers of IT divisions of government agencies must be installed<br />

<strong>Vietnam</strong>s Ministry of Information and Communications has instructed<br />

that 100% of all of <strong>Vietnam</strong>s government agencies servers must run free<br />

<strong>software</strong> by June 30, 2009. They also mandate that IT divisions train their<br />

staff <strong>to</strong> <strong>use</strong> this <strong>software</strong> and require 50% of the drones <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> <strong>use</strong> the<br />

technology "proficiently".<br />

IT divisions at government agencies comprise the IT departments of<br />

ministries and government agencies, provincial and municipal Departments<br />

of Information and Communications.<br />

This is the first step in a <strong>to</strong>tal plan <strong>to</strong> hurd <strong>Vietnam</strong> (pictures) in<strong>to</strong> free<br />

<strong>software</strong> solutions.<br />

Servers of ministries agencies and local state agencies are required <strong>to</strong><br />

follow suit and 70% of their servers are required <strong>to</strong> run free <strong>software</strong> by<br />

December 31, 2009 and all staff at these agencies must be able <strong>to</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>open</strong><br />

<strong>source</strong> <strong>software</strong> in their jobs by December 31, 2010.<br />

The Ministry of Information and Communications recommends free<br />

<strong>software</strong> including:<br />

• The OpenOffice.org office suite<br />

• Mozilla ThunderBird e-mail <strong>software</strong><br />

• Mozilla FireFox web browser<br />

• The <strong>Vietnam</strong>ese typing <strong>software</strong> Unikey.<br />

requested that Computer traders do not not sell PCs installed with "cracked<br />

<strong>software</strong>", but "<strong>open</strong> <strong>source</strong> ones".<br />
