7. Evidence of Support Section 105 (D): Evidence of local demand or support This section should provide evidence of support, where appropriate, from the applicant’s potential audience or from prospective local advertisers. Rother FM ran a two-week RSL trial service in May 2005, designed to give our potential listeners and advertisers an idea of what our full-time service would sound like. Despite the short time period and limited signal, there was an enthusiastic response from listeners via email and phone. We received dozens of emails praising the station’s output, in particular the local information and the blend of music. Here are some of the comments sent to us by email: “I for one will be waiting for you to come back on air.” – Mr J Watson “Hope it’s made permanent.” – David Meakin “A quality mix of music for all ages, even for us 50 somethings.” – anon “We do need our own radio station just like Dearne FM.” – Christine Millns “The music has been varied, something for every age group, info about travel and events happening has been tip-top.” – Yvette Davies “Fantastic, makes a change from listening about L**ds and Sh***ield all the time.” – “Rich” “The local news is really useful… A good choice of music from the 60s up.” – anon “Very good format.” – “Dave” “I’ll be telling friends and family about this.” – C M Docker “I want you to keep kicking out your tunes, you’re a breath of fresh air.” – Tracy Norbury “Unlike most other radio stations all song titles are clearly stated. Glad to hear the local news about Rotherham.” – Ian Priestley “A good mix of music, information and news.” – Paul Rowe “Yo. Bout time we had a station for Roth… Keep up the good work.” – Alan Dunn And, from the Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham: “Thank you for the support you have given for our Open Day. I understand it is the best attended ever, which I am sure in part is due to your mentions.” 42
Section 105 (D): Evidence of local demand or support Rother FM has also gained support from the Rotherham Chamber and from a number of local businesses and groups who have declared an interest in advertising, and/or support for our proposals. Some of these groups advertised on our RSL, others have worked with one of the Lincs FM Group’s other stations. Here are selected quotes from some of those letters: “We believe Rother FM will deliver a new local station under Lincs FM Group’s management to meet the requirements of business and the community in Rotherham. I am happy that this letter of support stems from a decision of the full Representation Council and fully represents the voice of the business community in Rotherham.” John Lewis, Chief Executive, Rotherham Chamber “Having met with representatives of Rother FM and the group running the station, we are delighted at their application… Based on the models of Lincs and Trax FM, we are confident that the information and local news coverage will be first-class and, from what we are able to ascertain, they will have the support of local business.” Jonathan Fitzgerald and Steve Charles, Rotherham Chamber “We used your temporary Rotherham station earlier last year and will definitely advertise on Rother FM when you start broadcasting.” Dave Jones, Dixon Ford “We will do everything in our power to support the Rother FM application as their support for local businesses has already been shown.” John Silker, Hellaby Hall Hotel “I have just completed my first radio campaign with Trax FM… It is a shame that Rother FM was not on air, as I would have extended my campaign… I will definitely use Rother FM for my branches in Rotherham if you are successful.” Trevor Morris, BullsEye Motorist Centres “I used your temporary licence to market our legal services… Following this ‘test’ on Rother FM I am now in the middle of my second campaign on Trax FM.” Nicola McLaren, Malcolm C Foy & Co., Solicitors “Lakeside Village would like to show their support for Rother FM… We are regular advertisers on Trax FM and consider that the Rother FM service would be beneficial.” Laura Clarkson, Lakeside Village, Doncaster “Rother FM would be perfect for the town of Rotherham, its people and its businesses and organisations.
