Chapter 2<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

2.1. Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Environment, Safety and Oc c upati onal<br />

Health)(S<strong>AF</strong>/MIQ). Provides oversight for all Air Force policy related to environment, safety and occupational<br />

health.<br />

2.2. The Surgeon General (HQ US<strong>AF</strong>/SG). Provides policy guidance for operating the <strong>dosime</strong>try program<br />

and ensures the program complies with Federal rules and regulations, DoD and Air Force policy,<br />

and accepted scientific practice.<br />

2.3. Commander, Air Force Materiel Command (HQ <strong>AF</strong>MC/CC). Implements the <strong>dosime</strong>try program<br />

through operational control of the US Air Force Center for Radiation Dosimetry (IERA/SDRD).<br />

2.4. Commander, HQ 311th Human Systems Wing (311th HSW/CC): Provides the facilities, technical<br />

expertise and personnel for operating the US Air Force Center for Radiation Dosimetry (IERA/<br />

SDRD).<br />

2.5. Director, Institute of Environment, Safety, Occupational Health and Risk Assessment (IERA/<br />

CC), through the US Air Force Center for Radiation Dosimetry (IERA/SDRD):<br />

2.5.1. Establishes and maintains accreditation for the personnel <strong>dosime</strong>try program through the<br />

National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), administered by the National Institute<br />

of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the following categories at a minimum:<br />

2.5.1.1. Whole body <strong>dosime</strong>ters - Low and high-energy photons (protection and accident ranges);<br />

beta particles; neutrons; and mixtures (NVLAP performance test categories I-VIII, inclusive).<br />

2.5.1.2. Extremity <strong>dosime</strong>ters - Low and high-energy photons; beta particles (NVLAP performance<br />

test categories I-C, II-A, III, and IV-C).<br />

2.5.1.3. Neutron <strong>dosime</strong>ters - Neutrons and high-energy photons (NVLAP performance test categories<br />

IV and VIII).<br />

2.5.2. Provides, processes and analyzes NVLAP accredited thermoluminescent <strong>dosime</strong>ters (TLDs)<br />

for external monitoring of personnel identified by the installation RSO as meeting criteria in Chapter<br />

1, Paragraph 1.2.<br />

2.5.3. Prepares and provides reports, listings or other documentation as may be necessary to ensure<br />

installation RSO has information necessary to effectively administer the installation level program.<br />

2.5.4. Provides on-call technical assistance to the installation RSO, or other individuals as may be<br />

appropriate, on external radiation <strong>dosime</strong>try and program operation.<br />

2.5.5. Ensures all <strong>dosime</strong>try results, both internal and external, are incorporated into the US<strong>AF</strong><br />

MRER.<br />

2.5.6. Briefs the US<strong>AF</strong> Radioisotope Committee at its quarterly meeting on program status and statistical<br />

trends for the previous quarter.
