9. 27.065 kHz (Citizens B<strong>and</strong> channel 9) - Monitored by many<br />

public service organizations <strong>and</strong>, to a limited extent, by<br />

Coast Guard shore stations.<br />

B. SAR Dedicated Frequencies. The following frequencies have been<br />

dedicated for SAR use:<br />

1. 3023 kHz - International voice/CW SAR on scene.<br />

2. 5680 kHz - International voice/CW SAR on scene.<br />

3. 123.1 MHz - International voice SAR on scene.<br />

4. 156.3 MHz (channel 6) - VHF-FM merchant ship <strong>and</strong> Coast Guard<br />

SAR on scene.<br />

5. 282.8 MHz - Joint/Combined on scene <strong>and</strong> DF.<br />

6. 40.5 MHz (FM) - United States Military Joint Common Frequency<br />

(previously Air Force distress frequency).<br />

7. 8364 kHz - During <strong>Navy</strong> Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA)<br />

operations in support of fleet units, a listening watch,<br />

governed by NWP-19, should be maintained by supporting units<br />

or the "guard" ship.<br />

314 IFF Equipment<br />

Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) equipment consists of a radar<br />

interrogator <strong>and</strong> a transponder. The interrogator, incorporated into an<br />

air search radar system, transmits an electronic challenge. Any<br />

transponder within range replies with a user-entered code <strong>and</strong>, in most<br />

transponders, altitude. Transponder replies may be detected at greater<br />

range than the radar return of the craft itself. The user can dial<br />

codes into the transponder to signal a message to the interrogator<br />

operator. Code 7700 indicates a distress, Code 7600 a communications<br />
