patients worldwide. Within the United States, the 375th<br />

Aeromedical Airlift Wing is headquartered at Scott AFB.<br />

Subordinate detachments, plus almost <strong>50</strong> Air <strong>National</strong> Guard <strong>and</strong><br />

Air Force Reserve aeromedical units, are located throughout<br />

the United States <strong>and</strong> are available for airmedevac missions.<br />

Aeromedical Evacuation Control Centers (AECCs) are<br />

continuously manned.<br />

4. Special-Purpose Aircraft, such as photographic reconnaissance<br />

aircraft, operated by the Strategic Air Comm<strong>and</strong> (SAC), or<br />

Side-Looking Radar Reconnaissance (SLAR) aircraft, can be used<br />

over both water <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>. In addition, Electronic<br />

Intelligence (ELINT) <strong>and</strong> Electronic Countermeasures (ECM)<br />

aircraft are equipped with a variety of sensors for<br />

determining the location of electromagnetic emitters. Their<br />

equipment includes sophisticated DF <strong>and</strong> usually some type of<br />

filmstrip recording capability for photographic, radar, <strong>and</strong><br />

electronic targets. Flights may be requested through AFRCC.<br />

Other aircraft also have Airborne General Illumination<br />

Lightself (AGIL), sometimes called a Battlefield Illumination<br />

Assistance System (BIAS). It is effective in search efforts<br />

<strong>and</strong> invaluable in the lighting of distress areas. This system<br />

is more dependable, more economical, <strong>and</strong> less hazardous than<br />

parachute flares.<br />

5. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP), using corporate <strong>and</strong> privately<br />

owned aircraft, flies the majority of SAR missions in the<br />

Inl<strong>and</strong> Region. The CAP, composed of aviation-oriented<br />

civilians, military reservists, <strong>and</strong> active duty military<br />

volunteers, is organized along conventional military lines, by<br />

state wings. CAP facilities operate in every state <strong>and</strong> Puerto<br />

Rico. At least one RSC, normally unmanned except while<br />

conducting an active mission, is usually maintained in each<br />

wing. CAP forces are activated by the AFRCC, which authorizes<br />

CAP SAR missions. In the Alaskan<br />
