coordinator <strong>and</strong> staff for compiling procedures <strong>and</strong> practices for cave<br />

rescues. Each "grotto" (local club) throughout the United States<br />

maintains a rescue team, often including a doctor. Assistance can be<br />

requested by contacting AFRCC.<br />

230 SAR RESOURCES<br />

Resources available for SAR response include any SRU, station,<br />

operational activity, or other resource that can be used during a SAR<br />

mission. SAR coordinators organize them to provide the most effective<br />

response. SMCs normally select resources from those listed in the SAR<br />

plan, but may request other resources during a SAR mission. An SRU is<br />

any craft, vehicle, or team that can operate independently. The use of<br />

any SRU depends on SMC judgment, <strong>and</strong> is governed not only by SRU ability<br />

to reach the distress scene, but also by other SRU capabilities,<br />

training, <strong>and</strong> experience. While many resources exist, the <strong>National</strong> SAR<br />

<strong>Manual</strong> details only resources commonly available.<br />

231 Aircraft SRUs<br />

Aircraft SRU can quickly search large areas, intercept <strong>and</strong> escort<br />

aircraft or other SRUs, <strong>and</strong> perform aerial delivery of supplies,<br />

equipment, <strong>and</strong> personnel. While the pilot is the final judge of SRU<br />

capability during a mission, SMCs should consider the following when<br />

using aircraft SRUs.<br />

A. General Aircraft Types <strong>and</strong> Capabilities<br />

1. Helicopters, because of their slow speed <strong>and</strong> hovering ability,<br />

are effective aircraft SRUs, particularly for small targets or<br />

for close scrutiny of terrain or sea. Their ability to l<strong>and</strong><br />

in confined areas <strong>and</strong> to operate from ships usually enables<br />

them to aid survivors long before<br />
