When the aircraft is within visual range of the ship, visual<br />

bearings are taken <strong>and</strong> plotted with radar ranges. This<br />

provides a more accurate plot than one relying entirely upon<br />

electronic information. Radar bearings are susceptible to<br />

errors, although a constant error may also exist with radar<br />

ranges from a particular piece of equipment. Early in the<br />

search, radar <strong>and</strong> visual bearings should be compared for any<br />

difference that would reveal a radar bearing error. If a<br />

constant radar bearing error is detected, all subsequent radar<br />

bearings are corrected during the search.<br />

b. Using a gyrorepeater <strong>and</strong> a pelorus, visual bearings<br />

are taken from a position on the wing of the vessel bridge by<br />

the "bearing taker" who has communications with the vessel<br />

"air plotter" in CIC.<br />

5. Plotting st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

a. The following st<strong>and</strong>ard symbols should be used on both<br />

the air plot <strong>and</strong> the surface plot to visually indicate the<br />

source of the fix/DR data:<br />
