SAR Facility: Any unit, comm<strong>and</strong>, device, or system used for SAR<br />

operations.<br />

SAR Incident: Any situation requiring notification <strong>and</strong> alerting of the<br />

SAR system <strong>and</strong> which may require SAR mission(s).<br />

SAR Liaison Officer: An officer assigned to promote coordination during<br />

a SAR mission.<br />

SAR Mission: Any SAR situation involving dispatch of SAR resources.<br />

SAR Mission Coordinator (SMC): The official assigned by the SAR<br />

Coordinator to coordinate <strong>and</strong> control a SAR mission.<br />

SAR Mission Information Officer (SMIO): The official designated by the<br />

SMC for coordinating, controlling, <strong>and</strong> disseminating news releases, or<br />

other information, concerning a specific SAR mission.<br />

SAR Plan: Description of SAR resources, procedures, <strong>and</strong> areas of<br />

responsibility.<br />

SAR Points of Contact (SPOC): <strong>Rescue</strong> Coordination Centers <strong>and</strong> other<br />

established <strong>and</strong> recognized national points of contact that can accept<br />

alert data to enable the rescue of persons in distress.<br />

SARSAT: See <strong>Search</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Rescue</strong> Satellite-Aided Tracking.<br />

SAR Stage: St<strong>and</strong>ard steps in the orderly progression of SAR missions,<br />

normally Awareness, Initial Action, Planning, Operations, <strong>and</strong> Mission<br />

Conclusion.<br />

Satellite Ground Track: Path on the earth's surface directly below a<br />

satellite's orbit.<br />

Sea: Condition of the surface resulting from waves <strong>and</strong> swells.<br />

Sea Current (SC): The residual current when currents caused by tides <strong>and</strong><br />

local winds are subtracted from local current. It is the main, largescale<br />

flow of ocean waters.<br />
