GLOSSARY<br />

A-probability: Percentage representing probability that the "A" rather<br />

than the "B" solution represents a real position.<br />

A-solution: Of the two solutions derived from single satellite pass<br />

data, the one more likely to be related to the real position.<br />

Active Site: Position retained in the MCC data base for potential<br />

correlation with other data.<br />

Advanced SAR Staging Base: A suitable preselected location with the SMC<br />

near possible SAR incidents for staging SRUs, <strong>and</strong> supporting personnel.<br />

Advisory Area: A designated area within a flight information region<br />

where air traffic advisory service is available.<br />

Aerodrome: A defined area on l<strong>and</strong> or water (including any buildings,<br />

installations <strong>and</strong> equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in<br />

part for the arrival, departure <strong>and</strong> surface movement of aircraft.<br />

Airport.<br />

Aeronautical Fixed Service (AFS): A telecommunication service between<br />

specified fixed points provided primarily for the safety of air<br />

navigation <strong>and</strong> for the regular, efficient <strong>and</strong> economical operation of<br />

air services.<br />

Aerospace Drift (Da): Drift caused by bailout trajectory or aircraft<br />

gliding distance.<br />

Aerospace Position: Initial position of a distressed aircraft at the<br />

time of reentry, engine failure, aircrew ejection or bailout.<br />

Airborne Warning <strong>and</strong> Control System (AWACs): <strong>US</strong>AF Boeing E-3 airborne<br />

radar system. Records primary <strong>and</strong> secondary radar targets. System<br />

capabilities classified. Recorded data is retained for a period not<br />

exceeding 10 days by the 552nd AWAC Wing (TAC), Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.<br />

Aircraft Glide: Maximum ground distance an aircraft could cover during<br />

descent.<br />

Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC): An FAA facility providing air<br />

traffic control service principally during en route flight to aircraft<br />

operating on IFR flight plans within controlled airspace.<br />

Air Traffic Control (ATC): A service operated by an appropriate<br />

authority to promote the safe, orderly, <strong>and</strong> expeditious flow of air<br />

traffic.<br />

ALERFA: ICAO equivalent to Alert phase.<br />

Alert: COSPAS-SARSAT report of an apparent distress routed to the search<br />

<strong>and</strong> rescue system.
