B. Ejection seat mechanisms. Many military aircraft are fitted<br />

with ejection seats. If a pilot ditches or crash l<strong>and</strong>s rather than<br />

bailing out, <strong>and</strong> has to be removed from the aircraft while still in the<br />

ejection seat, extreme care should be taken to avoid triggering the seat<br />

mechanism. The activating h<strong>and</strong>les are indicated by red or black/yellow<br />

coloring.<br />

C. Chemical <strong>and</strong> radiation hazards. <strong>Rescue</strong> personnel must exercise<br />

caution when approaching or boarding an unfamiliar vessel, or when<br />

approaching a vehicle or aircraft crash site. In addition to obvious<br />

dangers of fire <strong>and</strong> explosion, there may be danger of exposure to<br />

chemicals or radiation. For example, many fishing vessels use liquid<br />

ammonia to refrigerate their catch. If a fishing vessel crew is sick or<br />

unconscious, there may be an ammonia leak in the refrigeration system.<br />

The Chemical Hazard Response Information System (CHRIS) <strong>Manual</strong> provides<br />

information on chemical hazards, symptoms following exposure, <strong>and</strong><br />

treatment of exposure victims. It also shows hazardous material labels<br />

that should, but may not, accompany chemicals.<br />

760 RU RELIEF AND RETURN TO BASE<br />

RU relief on scene follows the same general procedures as the<br />

relief of SRUs on scene. When possible, a complete briefing should be<br />

given to the relieving RU. The time required for an RU to return to<br />

base should be considered for units which have a limited on scene<br />
