procedure turns, or other such maneuvers. Figure 6-3 shows<br />

this general procedure.<br />

C. Locating an EPIRB/ELT<br />

1. If SARSAT data is not available, the initial search for<br />

survivors equipped with an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio<br />

Beacon (EPIRB) or an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)<br />

should be conducted at high altitude for increased range,<br />

particularly for VHF/UHF beacons. The SRU receiver should be<br />

tuned to the beacon frequency with the squelch off. The<br />

frequency should be guarded aurally <strong>and</strong> visually, if it is<br />

equipped with homing capability.<br />

2. Initially a search pattern should be used which sweeps the<br />

probable area until a signal is detected <strong>and</strong> homing is begun.<br />

See Figure 6-4. If the signal is too weak to actuate the<br />

homing device, or if the aircraft is not so equipped, the<br />

aircraft should execute a homing pattern based<br />
