• A true EAMS is one that provides maintenance functionality but<br />

is also a fully integrated module of an enterprise system. The<br />

integration will then be part of the overall software design and<br />

immediate updating of files takes place rather than data being<br />

passed between system modules.<br />

• A third-party EAMS will usually require data to be passed<br />

between systems and is therefore interfaced not integrated.<br />

The benefits achievable by a computerised maintenance management<br />

system are very much dependent on the extent of the integration of<br />

the maintenance management system and other sections of the<br />

organisation. The selected system must not only satisfy the planning,<br />

c o n t rol and information needs of the maintenance department, but<br />

must also provide the data/information flow to and from the other<br />

sections of the organisation.<br />

specific portals and general portals but they all operate in much the<br />

same way. If you wish to send out a tender to a number of suppliers<br />

then all you need do is send the tender to a portal you subscribe to<br />

and they will circulate it to appropriate suppliers. The suppliers re p l y<br />

to the portal operator who forw a rds the responses to you for<br />

consideration. When you decide on the best supply contract, you<br />

place your order through the portal operator and this in theory cuts<br />

down the time and eff o rt you spend in tracking down the most<br />

competitive deal.’<br />

Stick-On Memory Buttons - Button sized stainless steel encased<br />

e l e c t ronic buttons provide an alternative to Barcoding that are able<br />

to be used in wet and dirty environments [just needs electrical contact<br />

with the hand held data collector]. These buttons are also available<br />

that measure temperature, and have the ability to store maintenance<br />

data [ie maintenance instructions can be transferred to the data<br />

logger when contact is made with the button].<br />

Transponders - Similar function to the ‘Buttons’ but do not re q u i re<br />

direct electrical contact. The data-logger sends a radio signal, that<br />

e n e rgises the transponder, and which allows transfer of data to or<br />

from the transponder.<br />

Hand Held Data Loggers/Palm Devices<br />

Hand Held Data Loggers/Palm Devices are small computers that are<br />

t r a n s p o rtable, often pocket sized, and able to be used in most<br />

maintenance environments.<br />

• The ability to programme the data logger for PM Routines or<br />
