Freshman Amy Ruston
Sets New Track Record
One of the outstanding winners
in Lehman athletics this year is
freshman track star Amy Ruston,
who took first place in the NCAA
Division III Atlantic Regional Cross
Country Championship.
Amy Ruston races to win
the CUNY Championships,
setting a record pace for the
event.
With a time of 22:37:9, Ruston
edged out the College of New Jersey’s
runner at the regionals by 1.2
seconds, winning the individual title
against 200 others and setting a new
course record.
As a result of her win, Ruston went
on to represent Lehman as an individual
qualifier at the NCAA Division
III Championships in Wisconsin,
where she finished in 70th place
out of 215 national competitors.
Earlier in the season, Ruston—who
comes from Maine—finished first
in the CUNY Athletic Conference
Cross Country’s Championships.
Suffering through injuries that set
back her training, she managed
to still hit a record time of 19:00,
which beat the CUNY record of
20:27. ◆
Lehman Sports Round-Up:
A Mix of Spirit, Action and Talent Marks the Fall Season
The Lehman athletic season has witnessed
some exciting matches and remarkable
performances from both individual players and
teams. Here's a round-up of the fall action.
WOMEN'S VOLLEY-
BALL: Under the direction
of first-year head
coach Edwin Gonzalez,
the team advanced to the
CUNY Conference semifinals
before losing to
Baruch College. Lehman
sophomore Yaniza De Los
Santos and junior Isabel
Lorenzo were chosen for
the all-tournament team.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The team finished the
season in seventh place in the CUNY Athletic
Conference, receiving stellar performances
from Micaela Tabing, who was named the
number one seed for the Lightning.
MEN'S SWIMMING:
Finishing second overall
in the CUNY Conference
swim championships,
the Lehman team was
led by the freshman duo
of Darnell James and
Hector Pena. James and
Pena both were selected
as CUNY Conference allstars
and recognized by the
ECAC Committee.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:
This sport at Lehman has
returned to the upper echelons
of the CUNY Athletic
Conference. With an outstanding
freshman class and
the return of CUNY all-star
Shatasia Little, the Lightning
surpassed the win total
of the previous two seasons Maria Loor races
and emerged as a force to down the court.
be reckoned with—not
only this season but in years to come. Seventhyear
head coach Eric Harrison recorded his
100th win in a contest against CUNY's Medgar
Evers College, making him the leader for team
victories in the history of women's basketball
at Lehman. Little and freshman center Maria
Loor, who comes to Lehman from Ecuador,
were selected as CUNY Conference all-stars.
Holding on to the chance of an upset in the
CUNY championships, the Lightning made it
into the semi-final round, but ran into trouble
against the College of Staten Island. Next time
around, the team looks forward to both a rematch
and another record-breaking season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL:
The Lehman team continued
its dominance in the
CUNY Athletic Conference
and came very close
to maintaining its 2003-04
championship position. In
a Conference game against
John Jay College, senior
forward Miguel Jorge, who Sekani Francis
led the team, became the
(above) and
newest member of the 1,000 Miguel Jorge.
point club.
The Lightning came
into the Conference championships
with a 13-game
winning streak, but lost in
a close match against the
College of Staten Island.
Junior center 6’10” Sekani
Francis, the CUNY Athletic
Conference’s Player of the
Year, came through for Lehman, scoring 27
points and 11 rebounds. At his side was junior
all-star guard Willy Vargas, who contributed 17
points in the game.
The season ended on a high note, however,
with the ECAC quarterfinals, as Jorge scored at
the buzzer, converting a game-winning jump
shot that led Lehman to victory against New
York University, 63-61, in overtime. ◆
Spring Sports: The Road Ahead
WOMEN'S SOFTBALL: The women hope to
win their way back to the championship form
of three seasons ago.
MEN’S BASEBALL: The team is aiming for a
return to post-season play in the CUNY AC.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The men are becoming
a team to be reckoned with.
