Princeton University is a private, coeducational university
located in Princeton, N .J ., midway between
New York City and Philadelphia .
One of the country's outstanding educational institutions,
Princeton is often characterized as "the smallest
of the great research universities . "
When Princeton was chartered in 1746 as the College
of New Jersey, it became British North America's
fourth college . Originally located in Elizabeth, and
later in Newark, the College moved to Princeton in
University Chapel
1756 to occupy the newly completed Nassau Hall,
which housed the entire college for nearly half a
century . Nassau Hall was one of the largest buildings in
the colonies and played an important part in their early
history, serving as the home of the continental Congress
in 1783 and surviving bombardment during the Battle
of Princeton, January 3, 1777 . Today Nassau Hall holds
many of the universities administrative offices, including
those of William G . Bowen, the 17th President o f
Princeton .
Princeton has expanded considerably since its early
years - in campus, in enrollment . and in breadth of
instruction. The campus now covers more than 2,000
acres, of which 200 comprise the main campus . A
wealth of architectural styles is displayed, ranging
from the oldest colonial buildings to the predominantly
Gothic dormitories . and including modern structures
by such eminent architects as Minoru Yamasaki, Edward
Larrabee Barnes . Lew Davis . and I .M . Pei .
The student body numbers approximately 4,400
undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students in more
than 60 departments and programs . The Univesity
offers instruction in the liberal arts and sciences, and i n
1879 Hall
the professional programs of the School of Architecture
and Urban Planning, the School of Engineering and
Applied Science, and the Woodrow Wilson School of
Public and International Affairs .
A significant change in Princeton undergraduate life
was announced .in 1980. Three additional residential
colleges are being added to the present two and within
the next year all freshman and sophomores will live in
colleges housing between 450 and 500 students each
with a central dining and social facility .
Athletics at Princeton probably involve more students
than any other non-academic activity on campus . The
University's commitment to amateur athletics has
fostered a wide range of intercollegeiate and intramural
programs for all levels of athletic aoil ty Princeton has
nearly 80 teams and crews which participate in intercollegiate
and club varsity competition and which
involve nearly 35 percent of the student body . About 60
percent of all undergraduates are currently involved in
the intramural athletics program .
Princeton's facilities for athletics are generally considered
among the finest in the nation . They include
two large gymnasiums . extensive playing fields, indoor
and outdoor tennis courts . a45,000-seat stadium with a
new all-weather track, a field house, an indoor rink for
ice hockey and skating, a boat house and an indoo r
Three miles northeast of the main campus on U .S .
Route 1 is the University's James Forrestal Research
Campus. On this campus, more than 600 Univesity
scientists and engineers are exploring an alternate
source of energy at the Plasma Physics Laboratory, a
major nuclear fusion research project sponsored by
the U .S . Department of Energy .
HEAD COACH JIM HIGGIN S
1 6
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/fuc46b00/pdf
Coach Jim Higgins, 40, begins his sixth year at the helm of
Princeton's hockey program . Last season the Tigers finished with
an overall record of 9-14-3 including a 5-3-2 mark in Ivy playgood
for third place in the League . Higgins coached squads have
posted a total record of 46-73-9 during his five years at Princeton .
This past summer, Higgins coached in the National Sports Festival
IV in Indianapolis, Ind ., held July 22-30 . He was selected to the
coaching staff by a committee of college coaches with assistance
from the Amateur Hockey Association (AHA), and led his South
squad to a bronze medal .
The Cambridge, Massachusetts native took over a floundering
Colgate program in 1975 as his first head coaching assignment . In
the next two seasons the Red Raiders improved dramatically,
compiling marks of 9-16 and 12-16. In 1977 Higgins led the
Colgate squad to its best ECAC season since 1966, and started the
upswing in fortunes that culminated in the Red Raiders' first playoff
appearance in 14 years . Colgate finished with a 10-14 ECAC
Division I record, which included wins over both Boston University
and New Hampshire-the East's two top clubs that year and
eventual third and fourth place finishers in the NCAA finals .
Higgins moved to Princeton the next year and directed the Tigers
to their best finish in a decade. Princeton went 9-14-1, a marked
improvement over the 3-21-1 mark of the previous year . After
losing the nucleus of his Tiger team to graduation . Higgins saw the
team stumble to a 5-17-4 record in 1978-79 .
In 1980, Princeton logged an 11-15 record, 7-3 in Ivy play . It was
the first winning Ivy season for the Tigers since 1953 . Two seasons
ago the Tigers improved again-to 12-13-their best record since
1967-68 .
Higgins stepped into the collegiate coaching ranks in 1970 as
coach of freshman hockey at Dartmouth and compiled a four-year
record of 52-17-2 including a 17-1 mark in 1973 . He spent a year as
assistant varsity coach at Brown before moving on to Colgate .
Higgins is a 1963 graduate of Boston University where he played
an important role on Terrier teams . Following graduation he
served in the U .S. Army Medical Corps before beginning his
coaching career at Falmouth (Mass.) High School in 1966 . In 1967
he became head coach at Falmouth and led his teams to a threeyear
record of 34-4-1, dropping only one regular season game
during that span .
Higgins resides in Hopewell, N .J., with his wife Anne, their six-year
old daughter Caitrin and two-year old daughter Kienan .
Northwood School in Lake Placid, N .Y . His teams compiled a record of 67-20-2 during the span .
In 1978-79, his first season as the Northwood coach, Delventhal led the team to a 25-4 record and
the championship of the 1978 Choate School Christmas Tournament .
The 25 victories in that season constituted a record at Northwood . surpassing the achievements
of such previous coaches as Jim Fullertown (coach at Brown University, 1956-70), Charlie Holt
(head coach at the University of New Hampshire), and Brian Mason (head coach at Rochester
Institute of Technology) . The squad was voted the No . 1 Prep School team in the nation in the
Hockey Magazine poll . Delventhal also served as athletic director during his three years at
Northwood .
Delventhal's wife Allie is a graduate of Syracuse University and earned her masters degree from
Columbia University . They are the parents of a three-year old son, Brent.
THE BAKER MEMORIAL RIN K
HOBEY A.H. BAKER '1 4
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/fuc46b00/pdf
Some six decades ago, in December of 1921, it was announced that Princeton would
build a hockey rink and name it after its greatest athletic hero, Hobey Baker, whose
efforts on the ice, on the gridiron, and on the field of world conflct, had already
become the stuff of legend .
The spirit of Hobey Baker lives on in the rink which bears his name, in the S .R .O .
crowds which fill the stands, and in the teams which grace the ice . As part of the
University's ongoing commitment to hockey excellence, Baker Rink is undergoing
major renovations. The first and second stages of the multi-stage project have been
completed and more exciting improvements are on the way .
First, in the summer of 1981, new ice-making machinery was installed at Baker,
giving the rink as modern a system as can be found anywhere . Approximately
$575,000 was spent on a complete replacement of the rink's refrigeration system .
The second stage of the renovation was just recently completed . This included
construction of a new facility containing locker rooms, a trainer's room with
provisions for a whirlpool and a separate suture room, a changing room for coaches
and officials, a skate sharpening room, and rooms for equipment storage .
These improvements constitute the "tip of the iceberg" in the multistage plan to
make Baker Rink one of the finest skating facilities anywhere, for skaters and
spectators both . Among planned improvements are replacement of the lighting and
public address systems and renovation of the lobby area, including he refreshment
stand and rest rooms . When these renovations have been completed, the final
stages will include the construction of a balcony, the addition of new seating, and
the installation of an up-to-date air circulation system which will permit the
extension of the skating season .
The man after whom Baker Rink, the Hobey Baker Trophy and the Hobey Baker
Memorial Award are named was born in Wissahickon, Pennsylvania in 1892 . Baker
attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N .H. before coming to Princeton in
September 1910 .
It was at Princeton that Baker distinguished himself as the greatest collegiate
hockey player of all time, dominating every game he played, and frustrating the
hardest efforts of opponents to contain him . His skating and stickhandling skills
were unmatched . I n three years he led the Princeton team to a combined record of
27-7, including three Intercollegiate League Championships .
Also a standout on the gridiron, Baker captained the Princeton footballers in his
senior year, when the team compiled a record of 5-2-1 . In his three years as star
halfback, Princeton won 20 games, lost 3, and tied 4 . Baker's single-season
Princeton scoring record of 92 points, set in 1912, held up for more than 60 years .
A hero in life, so was Baker a hero in death . A captain, and commander of the 141st
Aero Squadron, American Expeditionary Forces, Bakerdied in Toul, France making
one last flight" shortly after the end of the first World War . Typical of Baker, he was
testing a newly repaired plane, so that no one under his command would have to
face the risk . Baker had, in fact, been given demobilization orders an hour before : his
duty was at an end, and he was to leave Paris by train that night .
For all his accomplishments, Hobey Baker has been elected a member of the
Hockey Hall of Fame, the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, and the National
Football Hall of Fame .
SHOAL BANDITS
A NEW WAY TO ENJOY TOBACC O
With new Skoal Bandits, there's no loose tobacco to deal with . Skoal Bandits is a
pinch of wintergreen flavored smokeless tobacco in a neat little pouch . So the
