The case for Quality of Service (<strong>QoS</strong>) in WANs/VPNs is largely self-evident because of its<br />

low-bandwidth links compared to the high-bandwidth requirements of most applications. However, the<br />

need for <strong>QoS</strong> is sometimes overlooked or even challenged in high-bandwidth Gigabit/TenGigabit<br />

campus LAN environments.<br />

Although network administrators sometimes equate <strong>QoS</strong> only with queuing, the <strong>QoS</strong> toolset extends<br />

considerably beyond just queuing tools. Classification, marking and policing are all important <strong>QoS</strong><br />

functions that are optimally performed within the campus network, particularly at the access layer<br />

ingress edge (access edge).<br />

Three important <strong>QoS</strong> design principles are important when deploying campus <strong>QoS</strong> policies:<br />
