LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR
Colleagues,
4 FutureBuild LA ULI LA’s Premier Green Conference & Expo
Welcome to FutureBuild LA 2010! In the development world we have seen sustainable
design take hold as a viable and effective strategy to reduce costs, increase returns, and save
energy on our projects. Last year’s FutureBuild LA event was the first of what has become
an annual conference devoted to the cutting-edge sustainability techniques and strategies
being employed by developers, financiers, builders, architects, legal professionals, policy
makers, building owners, planners, environmental professionals, and product vendors. These
innovations are showcased within the context of California and the greater Los Angeles region,
although their implications have a global reach. FutureBuild LA 2010 creates a dynamic forum
based on the sound expertise of our speakers, sponsors, and exhibitors, where attendees may
engage with professionals at each stage of the sustainability process to learn what works,
what doesn’t, and how to implement successful techniques in their own professional life.
Highlights from today’s program include:
• The climate for development in the future from a regulatory and financing standpoint
• HUD perspective on public finance and placemaking
• CalGreen standards and implementation
• Finance for retrofits
• Economic vitality of green tech
• Leveraging public dollars for sustainable projects
• Land use impacts of the 30/10 Initiative
• Case studies of successful sustainable real estate projects
FutureBuild LA 2010 is full to the brim with content geared towards an active discussion of
effective sustainability practices. I encourage you to stand up, ask questions, shake hands,
learn something, teach something, and come away better prepared to improve the built
environment. Get engaged and have some fun!
Looking forward,
Karl Fielding
Program Chair for FutureBuild LA 2010

through innovative financing structures, utility rebates, and tax incentives.
Panelists:
David Ely, President, EDSS / CA
decades of practice and occurs as a significant body
of his work – more than 2.5 million square feet and
1,500 housing units – comes out of the ground near the
famous intersection of Hollywood and Vine. Bill opened
a storefront office there in 1989 and immersed himself in
