Karl Fielding, PBS&J and FutureBuild Co-Chair, hosts a roundtable on the LA 30/10 transit plan. 7 | ULI Los Angeles Annual Report 2011 FutureBuild LA The opening panel with Cecilia Estolano, Green for All; Bob Hertzberg, G24 Innovations; James Finlay, Wells Fargo RETECHS; Romel Pascual, Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; and Kelly Boyer, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, discussed perspectives on sustainability for climate change. In 2010, FutureBuild LA served as ULI Los Angeles’ annual green conference aimed at bringing together developers, financiers, builders, law professionals, policy makers, planners, politicians, product innovators, building owners and operators, utilities, and other land use and real estate professionals, to explore sustainability from concept to execution. Through a series of panel discussions, workshops, case studies, seminars and roundtables, the event created a dynamic forum and fostered dialogue allowing participants to explore green and sustainable development strategies. Bob Hertzberg, Chair of G24 Innovations, discusses improvements in green development with Daniel Brock, Tecnospot Solar. Estela Lopez, Central City East Association, highlights opportunities to create a CleanTech corridor in Los Angeles. Bob Arbour, Triple Net Equities; Dr. Woodrow Clark, corecipient of the Nobel Peace Prize; and Katherine Aguilar Perez, ULI LA after his presentation on the new economic paradigm. Kelly Boyer, HUD; Tony Liou, Partner Energy; and Lynn Jacobs, formerly of California HCD, discuss housing policy ideas in California.
Students from Birmingham High School present their proposal for JEGMA Enterprises. The Best Overall Award was given to Crenshaw High School’s Avingston Arnold, Brittany Hodges, Stephany Lopez, and Genoveva Mendez. In 2010 UrbanPlan LA featured over 60 professional volunteers, and over 200 students competing on 40 teams from 7 different high schools. “UrbanPlan is an opportunity to expose students at a young age to the diversity of career paths available to them in real estate. It is an extremely rewarding experience to inspire young talent, at a time in many of their lives when they are unsure of their future path, to join our industry and become future leaders in shaping our communities.” - Alex Stone, Volunteer, ULI LA Young Leader Students from Birmingham High School practice their presentations in front of peers. UrbanPlan is a simulation classroom exercise for high school students. Students work in development teams to analyze and respond to an RFP for the redevelopment of a specific urban area. Development teams compete to secure the rights from a fictitious city council made up of UrbanPlan volunteers.
