At the Urban Land Institute, our mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. ULI Los Angeles, a district council of the Urban Land Institute, carries forth that mission as the preeminent real estate forum in Southern California, facilitating the open exchange of ideas, information and experiences among local, national and international industry leaders and policy makers. Established in 1936, ULI is a nonprofit education and research institute with over 30,000 members across the globe–1,500 here in the Greater Los Angeles area. As a nonpartisan organization, the Institute has long been recognized as one of America’s most respected and widely quoted sources of objective information on urban planning, growth, and development. The membership of ULI Los Angeles represents the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines. They include developers, builders, investors, architects, public officials, planners, real estate brokers, appraisers, attorneys, engineers, lenders, academics and students. Members of the Urban Land Institute in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara are automatically members of ULI Los Angeles. ULI Los Angeles offers educational events and tours, Young Leaders Group activities, UrbanPlan curriculum in public high schools, policy reports and tools, Technical Assistance Panels, and many signature programs. Alex J. Rose Chair, ULI Los Angeles Senior Vice President Development & Asset Management, Continental Development Corporation In last year’s message, I spoke of my ceaseless wonder at the passion and commitment of our members to the merging of their professional interests and expertise and the land use leadership mission of the Urban Land Institute. I also made the point that it is this very engagement that lies at the heart of what ULI accomplishes and is the very reason that ULI continues to attract and retain the best and the brightest of the land use profession. As you will see the experience+passion+commitment+engagement in 2010 yielded unbelievable results, including: • Inaugural Transit Oriented Development Summit which provided a platform to rethink how we plan, fund, and build our future communities in connection with transportation; • Collaboration with the five California District Councils to assess the economic implications of Senate Bill375 and provide recommendations to state officials for implementation; • ULI California High Speed Rail Summit stimulated conversation on enhancing the state’s transit infrastructure; • Five technical assistance panels aiding our communities with much needed professional guidance on challenging land use issues; • Over 30 breakfast, case study/tour and meet-and-greet programs, featuring industry leaders and best practice examples across the entire land use spectrum; • Member engagement has grown from 250 members in 2008 to over 400 volunteers working on over 30 separate committees. In 2011, ULI-LA plans to elevate these results and impacts to an even higher level. The year began with VantageForum, a partnership with the UCLA Ziman Center highlighting the perspectives of executives on the trends in the real estate industry, and the completion of ULI LA’s five-year strategic planning effort. The year will close with Los Angeles hosting the annual ULI Fall Meeting, which will celebrate the Institute’s 75th anniversary. In the middle of 2011, we will transition our leadership to the experienced hands of Los Angeles native, Ronald Altoon, founding and name partner of architecture and planning firm, Altoon + Porter. I expect great success to come to ULI Los Angeles under the leadership of Ronald. All of what we have accomplished and all of what we have planned is possible only because of the passion and dedication of our members, our staff and our many sponsors and stakeholders.
