Alex J. Rose
Chair, ULI Los Angeles
Senior Vice President
Development & Asset Management,
Continental Development Corporation
For nearly twenty years, and now as Chair of your Urban Land Institute’s Los
Angeles District Council, I never cease to be amazed and humbled by the amount
of time and effort, the vast array of creativity and the high degree of passion and
commitment our members volunteer to enable ULI to execute its land use
leadership mission here in Los Angeles. Always a pioneer and program of work
leader among ULI’s District Councils, the hard work of our volunteers and
dedicated staff has enabled ULI to exponentially expand its community impact
and serve the needs of its members. In the last year alone, ULI Los Angeles
launched a variety of bold new initiatives that will not only showcase the
innovation and creativity of its members, but will impart lasting and positive
impacts on the communities in which we all live, work and play. These initiatives
build on and expand the leadership demonstrated by our Executive Committee,
leadership that has positioned ULI Los Angeles as the recognized leader in land
use issues in the region.
In the midst of the most wrenching changes our profession has seen in
generations, it has been particularly gratifying to see significant increases
in attendance at ULI events and member participation in organizing these high
quality, full-of-take-home-value initiatives. Perhaps counterintuitive at first
glance, but not necessarily so on deeper reflection. When members channel their
passion to making a difference in the community and elect to make ULI their
engagement platform, good things happen and there is a palpable clamber for
more – more programs, more volunteer opportunities, more chances to interact
with and share time with fellow industry leaders. ULI LA is dedicated to helping
effectuate those opportunities.
I invite you to see the body of work we have completed and know that you will
agree, there’s a lot going on at ULI Los Angeles... and we’ve only just begun.
We look forward to seeing you be a part of the events that will make 2010
another standout year.
Sincerely,
Alex J. Rose
Chair, ULI Los Angeles
Message from the Chair
Thank you FY09 Sponsors
Benefits of Being a Member
One of the factors that drew me into a career in real estate development is that it’s a business
which deals with many of the issues central to human life: where are we going to live, where
are we going to work, where will we procure our sustenance, what kind of structures will house
these activities, and how will we travel between them.
Moreover, if we succeed in doing our jobs well, we provide significant benefits to our
communities in ways that are harder to measure, such as beauty, quality of public and private
spaces, community interactivity, efficient use of resources, cleaner air and water, traffic
reduction and many more. These can, in turn, contribute to better public health, decreased
crime, improved economic activity, and many other factors that are ingredients of a better quality
of life.
When I joined ULI, I was introduced to a network of people who think along these lines – who
work for the bottom line but also have their eyes on the greater good (and who insist that the
two are not incompatible). I have done my part by becoming actively involved with the
organization, saying “Yes” when offered the chance to sit on a committee or help organize an
event. I have met many of the most interesting people I know in the process, and have gained a
more and more well-rounded satisfaction with my professional life.
If you are new to ULI, please attend some of our events, large and small. You will not be
disappointed. If you have been around awhile but have not got involved, by all means pull that
thread. You will be happy you did.
Sincerely,
Michael Brown
sustainable development within the region.
In collaboration with the Los Angeles Chapter of
the American Planning Association, ULI LA led a
lively discussion with the Los Angeles members
of the Regional Targets Advisory Committee
- Richard Katz and Michael Woo on changing
climate change regulations and regional
Infrastructure Summit
Cities are built and sustained by the quality of
their infrastructure. Through the Infrastructure
Summit, ULI LA created a heightened
awareness of public infrastructure–especially
the relationship between infrastructure and land
use, developing models for better infrastructure
decision making, and financing models.
1000 Homes
1000 Homes is an initiative focused on helping
to end chronic homelessness in LA County.
It represents a long-term commitment by the
ULI Los Angeles District Council to remain
engaged in this complex and multi-faceted
issue and provide leadership in a form that is
contributive to the cause of ending
homelessness. The involvement of the private
sector in the battle to end chronic homelessness
is critical in order to develop solutions that are
effective, practical, and attainable. This year,
1000 Homes included a design competition and
a conference.
