The Struers Professional Materialographer Please find below details for the courses, held at our new state of the art premises on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The course usually runs 9.00am to 4.30pm on Tues & Wed, with things winding up between 3 & 4pm on the Thursday – probably a little earlier as most of the day is spent on further preparation of personal samples. The starting time is 9am on Tuesday, but please arrive for approx 8.45am for coffee and greetings. Dress is casual! No need for ties etc! For lunch, we normally have a buffet delivered – selection of sandwiches, snacks, cakes & fruit – please let me know if you have any special dietary requirements ( vegetarian, gluten free, allergies etc. ) and I’ll contact the caterers so they can accommodate. On the Wednesday evening, I take you guys out for dinner! We do have new lab coats here ( currently only Large or Extra Large size though ) and safety glasses, but you are more than welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Don’t forget to bring along any samples of your own material to prepare ( raw condition, previously mounted/examined - whatever you have available ), particularly if you are currently experiencing issues with your preparation process. The idea of participants bringing some of their own samples helps to make the lab preparation more relevant and may aid improvements in techniques used at your own place of work as you can experiment with different methods. If you could inform me of the types of materials you will be bringing, and any additional information (hardness, size etc) it would be extremely helpful in ensuring that we have the relevant consumables. If you have any additional questions, would like to reserve a place or make a booking, please do not hesitate to contact me. The course is of a practical nature in which 70% of the time is allocated to preparing samples in the
laboratory. You will work in small groups or individually using the most modern equipment available.
The other 30% of the time is devoted to theoretical instruction including the very latest preparation
research results in the field.
What is the cost?
Who runs the course?
Struers have always had an enviable reputation for technical excellence in the science of sample
preparation. This has been maintained by employing staff from appropriate technical backgrounds,
supplemented by extensive ‘in-house’ training. The Professional Materialographer course is currently
run by me, Ant, the Metallurgist & Laboratory Manager here at Struers Ltd.
I joined the Struers family in January 2007. Prior to this I studied Metallurgy at Brunel University and
during this time was able to undertake three 6 month periods in industry working for the M.O.D
( Admiralty Research Establishment ), Columbia Metals and Cummins Diesel Engines. During my 16
years at Cummins I provided metallurgical support and technical assistance to the engine business and
was also responsible for in-depth failure analysis on plant issues and returned components from the
field, reviewing, auditing and approving new suppliers and processes for many components including
such critical parts as gears, pistons and crankshafts.
Continued professional development
The course is also accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining and therefore able to offer
it to those studying towards a continuing Professional Development qualification.
