REIF <strong>The</strong> Cairo Genizah and its Treasures 43<br />

Arabic dialect of the Jewish communities, appear to have come <strong>in</strong>to<br />

existence at least as early as the n<strong>in</strong>th century 30 and to have been the<br />

<strong>in</strong>spiration for the tenth-century leader of the Babylonian Jewish<br />

community, the Egyptian scholar Sa'adya ben Joseph of Fayyum<br />

(882-942), to compose his own Judaeo-Arabic version, the text and<br />

spell<strong>in</strong>g of which were dest<strong>in</strong>ed to become the standard translation for<br />

the oriental Jewish communities for the rema<strong>in</strong>der of the medieval<br />

period. But Sa'adya was not only a translator of the Hebrew <strong>Bible</strong>; he<br />

also composed a commentary, more and more of which has recently<br />

come to light and demonstrated how as a philosopher he struggled to<br />

rationalize much of scripture but without overdo<strong>in</strong>g the degree of literalness.<br />

31 <strong>The</strong> exegetical work of his successor as head of the Sura<br />

yeshivah, Samuel ben Hofni, has also been rescued from the Genizah<br />

and is characterized by his desire to impose systems of classification<br />

on his treatment of the biblical texts. 32<br />

Of other exegetical material <strong>in</strong> Hebrew and Arabic from that same<br />

Egyptian source, some is extended, some brief; there are those that<br />

make use of the latest syntactical and philological theories while others<br />

prefer traditional midrashic methods; philosophy <strong>in</strong>spires one commentator,<br />

kabbalah another. 33 New discoveries reveal for the first<br />

time how scholars such as Judah ibn Balaam and Moses ibn Gikatilla<br />

handled difficult verses from the Hebrew <strong>Bible</strong> <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />
