We must first ascertain that <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> this<br />

passage fully coincides with that <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r statements<br />

made by <strong>the</strong> author concerning <strong>the</strong> character and<br />

duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Apostle in <strong>the</strong> great<br />

centres <strong>of</strong> his missionary field (vide mpra). Concern-<br />

ing Antioch we read that St. Paul was <strong>the</strong>re eviavrov<br />

author when he wrote <strong>of</strong> Rome would necessarily have<br />

been most concerned to record <strong>the</strong> duration and <strong>the</strong><br />

character <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's ministry in that city. We<br />

learn, moreover, that what seems at first sight so<br />

strange—namely, <strong>the</strong> scantiness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> information<br />

concerning <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>of</strong> St. Paul in Rome—is not<br />

out <strong>of</strong> character with <strong>the</strong> whole plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book<br />

for St. Luke's procedure is not o<strong>the</strong>rwise in his treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>of</strong> St. Paul in Antioch, Corinth,<br />

and Caesarea ; he has contented himself with a few<br />

quite general touches. Only in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> Ephesus<br />

has he imparted some detailed information. <strong>The</strong><br />
