ON THE PLAN OF THE GOSPEL OF ST. LUKE AND<br />

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Introduction we have ah'eady stated that<br />

St. Luke could not form his type <strong>of</strong> narrative for <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Acts</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> his gospel as it was created<br />

by St. Mark and developed by himself. <strong>The</strong> subject-<br />

matter was too different ; so that St. Luke was obliged<br />

to form for himself a new type. Yet in one point a<br />

certain likeness prevails between <strong>the</strong> plans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

two works. In his gospel St. Luke has arranged his<br />

material mider <strong>the</strong> headings : Jesus in Galilee ; Jesus<br />

on His way from Galilee through Samaria, &c., to<br />

Jerusalem ; Jesus in Jerusalem. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Acts</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

plan is analogous : <strong>the</strong> Gospel in Jerusalem ; <strong>the</strong><br />

Gospel on its way from Jerusalem through Samaria,<br />

&c., into <strong>the</strong> Gentile World and to Rome ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel<br />

in Rome. In both cases <strong>the</strong> progi'ession within <strong>the</strong><br />
