INTRODUCTION<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second chapter, which, in fact, anticipates<br />

<strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mighty drama, where, in<br />

words which somid like a triumphant conqueror's<br />

list <strong>of</strong> nations vanquished in a great campaign,<br />

we read : " Parthians and Medes and Elamites,<br />

<strong>the</strong> dwellers in Mesopotamia, Pontus, and Asia<br />

—and <strong>the</strong> rest. As far as <strong>the</strong> Roman Imperator<br />

rules, and far<strong>the</strong>r still beyond <strong>the</strong> bounds <strong>of</strong> his<br />

empire, <strong>the</strong> world now hears <strong>the</strong> Evangelic message<br />

and accepts it<br />

It is wonderful how firmly, exclusively, and con-<br />

sistently St. Luke throughout <strong>the</strong> whole book has<br />

kept <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mission and expansion <strong>of</strong> Chris-<br />

world and its rulers, represented by <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

governor and King Agrippa ; while <strong>the</strong> voyage and<br />

shipwreck tend to intensify <strong>the</strong> suspense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

reader as he wonders whe<strong>the</strong>r after all <strong>the</strong> Gospel<br />

will be proclaimed in <strong>the</strong> metropolis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world<br />

through <strong>the</strong> preaching <strong>of</strong> St. Paul. "And so we<br />

arrived at Rome" (koi ovtco9 e/? Ti]v*J*ct)juLijv fjXOajuiev,<br />

note <strong>the</strong> article)—with <strong>the</strong>se words <strong>the</strong> conclusion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book is introduced, and <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> conclusion runs: "And Paul preached (<strong>the</strong>re)<br />

<strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> God, and taught concerning <strong>the</strong><br />

1 Only one single subsidiary aim is to be discerned—<strong>the</strong> defence<br />

<strong>of</strong> St. Paul against Judaistic calumnies.<br />
