St. Luke who says this, and even expressly tells us<br />

that it was <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> Antioch that had <strong>the</strong> high<br />

courage to take up <strong>the</strong> matter " <strong>of</strong>ficially," and that<br />

sent St. Paul and St. Barnabas with some o<strong>the</strong>rs as<br />

delegates to Jerusalem (ot aSeXipol era^av ava/Salvav<br />

XV. 1 /. 3). In <strong>the</strong> decree <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Jeru-<br />

salem <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Antioch <strong>the</strong>refore is put first, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

follow Syria and Cilicia (xv. 23). <strong>The</strong> city appears<br />

henceforth as so to say St. PauPs new home, whi<strong>the</strong>r<br />

again returns after his so-called second missionary<br />

journey (xviii. 18, 22). Only <strong>the</strong>n does it vanish<br />

from <strong>the</strong> narrative.<br />

<strong>The</strong> picture <strong>of</strong> this Church which one thus gains<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Acts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Apostles</strong> is a very impressive,<br />

significant, and imposing one ; and yet <strong>the</strong> Pauline<br />

epistles tell us nothing about it, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong>
