<strong>The</strong> same attitude towards <strong>the</strong> names is plainly discern-<br />

ible in chapter's i.-vii. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Acts</strong> and in <strong>the</strong> we-sections.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> former passage (chapters i.—vii.) <strong>the</strong> author<br />

has only om:e written 'lepocroXvjuLa (in <strong>the</strong> introduction<br />

i. 4), where he tells us that our Lord commanded<br />

His disciples not to depart at once from <strong>the</strong> place<br />

Jerusalem (citto lepocroXvjULCov /jlyj yooplYeaOai) ; as for<br />

<strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passage everything in <strong>the</strong> early history<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church is <strong>of</strong> so l<strong>of</strong>ty a character that he<br />

only speaks <strong>of</strong> ^lepova-akrjij. (eleven times). In <strong>the</strong><br />

we-sections <strong>the</strong> reason <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> variation between <strong>the</strong><br />

two forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name is quite evident : in XX.<br />

16 ; XXl. 4, 15, 17 'lepocroXvixa is written because <strong>the</strong><br />

author is concerned simply with topographical notices<br />

(St. Paul wished to be in Jerusalem for Pentecost<br />

St. Paul ought not to go up to Jerusalem ; we took<br />

our journey up to Jerusalem ; when, however, we<br />

arrived at Jerusalem). But among <strong>the</strong>se verses stands<br />

a saying <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophet Agabus ; here we read in oratio<br />

directa (XXi. 11); tov avSpa . . . Stjo-ovo-lv ev 'lepoua-aXij/j.<br />

ol ^lovSaioi, and now <strong>the</strong> bystanders take up<br />

this word' lepova-aXtjjUL (XXi. 12), and also St. Paul says<br />

(XXi. 13) : airoQavelv el
