After <strong>the</strong> first three national names St. Luke continues<br />

with ol KUTOiKovvreg, because <strong>the</strong>re was no<br />

national name for Mesopotamia ; but this has led<br />

to a formal discrepancy with <strong>the</strong> preceding clause.<br />

St. Luke is speaking simply <strong>of</strong> such persons as were<br />

resident in Jerusalem (not <strong>of</strong> pilgrims for <strong>the</strong> feast),<br />

yet he describes <strong>the</strong>m most awkwardly as KaroiKOvureq<br />

rrjv Mea-OTTOTajuLiai/ k.t.X. after <strong>the</strong>ir former place <strong>of</strong><br />

abode. In its significance, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> second kutol-<br />

KOVVT69 must be regarded as pluperfect. Moreover,<br />

seeing that from Pontus onwards <strong>the</strong> author gives <strong>the</strong><br />

names in pairs and that ^louSalav—though <strong>the</strong> reading<br />

<strong>of</strong> all MSS.—is senseless, while 'Ap/uLcvlav (TertuUian,<br />

and once in Augustine), as well as ^vplav (Hieron.),<br />

are evidently only attempts to clear away a difiiculty
