rooms. Both houses have good cook<strong>in</strong>g facilities. Cooked food is<br />
also available. There are also three apartments available with facilities<br />
that <strong>in</strong>clude bedroom, kitchenette, bath and liv<strong>in</strong>g room. Brekkukot<br />
is the first guest house <strong>in</strong> Iceland that received an <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />
certification as a susta<strong>in</strong>able travel service. Other guest houses<br />
with<strong>in</strong> 15 - 20 km from Solheimar can ccommodate over 300 people.<br />
Today the garden displays seven sculptures by as many artists. It gives<br />
an overview <strong>of</strong> Icelandic sculpture dur<strong>in</strong>g the years 1900 -1950. The<br />
garden will be completed <strong>in</strong> the year 2000 when a total <strong>of</strong> 10 sculpture<br />
will be displayed.<br />
• Activities - Solheimar has an athletic club, choir, theatre group,<br />
gymnasium and an outdoor swimm<strong>in</strong>g facility all year round, with<br />
hot tub and steam bath. There are also f<strong>in</strong>e walk<strong>in</strong>g paths.<br />
• <strong>Eco</strong>-village Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Centre - which amongst other th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
courses on permaculture and educational days.<br />
The Solheimar community is self-sufficient, and has both worldly and<br />
spiritual aims. The core idea is to create harmony <strong>of</strong> traditions with<br />
new technologies that responsibly utilise natural resources, thereby<br />
hand<strong>in</strong>g over to future generations a planet <strong>in</strong> balance with itself that<br />
can provide the same opportunities for <strong>in</strong>dividual and communal selffulfilment.<br />
Self-sufficient communities such as Solheimar are leaders<br />
<strong>in</strong> discover<strong>in</strong>g natural solutions to environmental problems fac<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
world today.<br />
