The Keuruu <strong>Eco</strong>-village is situated on a beautiful southern slope <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Kivijarvi lake <strong>in</strong> Middle F<strong>in</strong>land about 70 kilometres to the West from<br />
Jyvaskyla. The community was founded <strong>in</strong> June 1997 and has now 20<br />
<strong>in</strong>habitants. There is space for more than 50 persons who want to live<br />
ecologically. It is mov<strong>in</strong>g towards function<strong>in</strong>g as a permacultural<br />
model.<br />
This eco-village consists <strong>of</strong> 54-hectares <strong>of</strong> land, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 24 hectares<br />
<strong>of</strong> meadow, and 30 build<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g three saunas by the lake - and<br />
many k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> possibilities for handicrafts, sports and other activities.<br />
Permaculture gardens, herb yards and greenhouses are <strong>in</strong> the mak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The community produces much <strong>of</strong> their own food aim<strong>in</strong>g at high selfreliance.<br />
The goal is to learn to susta<strong>in</strong> and conserve the traditional<br />
biodiversity <strong>of</strong> species <strong>in</strong> an otherwise cultivated rural environment.<br />
We are also reconstruct<strong>in</strong>g our energy systems. At the moment we are<br />
<strong>in</strong> an active plann<strong>in</strong>g phase to start the production <strong>of</strong> all our heat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
energy and electricity.<br />
The Keuruu <strong>Eco</strong>-village is a meet<strong>in</strong>g place for local people around us<br />
and people <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> our ideas. The eco-village is also a centre for<br />
courses <strong>in</strong> permaculture, environmental issues (eco-psychology, environmental<br />
education, etc.), rural skills and spiritual exercises (nature<br />
meditation, sacred dance, yoga etc.). We are able to <strong>of</strong>fer board and<br />
lodg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our dormitories for 40 persons.<br />
