Russia Kitezh<br />
Baryat<strong>in</strong>o<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g Kitezh is a new way <strong>of</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g at life: it is a liv<strong>in</strong>g, work<strong>in</strong>g communieco-village<br />
ty, a spiritual movement,, and a function<strong>in</strong>g organisation <strong>of</strong> people who<br />
believe that people <strong>in</strong> Russia and the rest <strong>of</strong> the world can build their<br />
lives on the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>of</strong> harmony, peace and love. It is a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />
form <strong>of</strong> eco-village community liv<strong>in</strong>g, one <strong>of</strong> its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Russia.<br />
The lifestyle at Kitezh is simple. The families live <strong>in</strong> traditional wooden<br />
houses with outside toilets and no runn<strong>in</strong>g water. They eat simply,<br />
mostly home-grown vegetables,<br />
dairy products, honey<br />
and wild mushrooms.<br />
The people are warm, openhearted<br />
and about half<br />
speak English. Visitors are<br />
always welcome, for just a<br />
few days or several weeks<br />
or months. Allow a day for<br />
travell<strong>in</strong>g between Moscow<br />
and Kitezh.<br />
<strong>Eco</strong>logia Trust, Scotland<br />
has worked <strong>in</strong> partnership with Kitezh s<strong>in</strong>ce its beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, support<strong>in</strong>g<br />
this enterprise <strong>in</strong> many ways, with visitors, exchange groups and<br />
rais<strong>in</strong>g funds for the development <strong>of</strong> Kitezh.<br />
In 1996 a youth group from the F<strong>in</strong>dhorn Foundation, Scotland, spent<br />
3 weeks at Kitezh and our children visited Scotland <strong>in</strong> 1997. Every<br />
summer a group <strong>of</strong> young Germans come to work as volunteers at Kitezh,<br />
and several foreign student volunteers have spent one or two<br />
months teach<strong>in</strong>g English to the children, build<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
gardens. They all have received a unique and wonderful experience.<br />
Visitors live with one <strong>of</strong> the families and take part <strong>in</strong> the daily work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
life and community celebrations.<br />
First time visitors will be met <strong>in</strong> Moscow and brought by car to Kitezh,<br />
a 4 or 5 hour journey depend<strong>in</strong>g on road conditions. There is also a<br />
daily public bus from Moscow to Baryat<strong>in</strong>o which takes 7-8 hours. We<br />
