Alex B. Gershman (gershman@ieee.org) received his Diploma and Ph.D. degrees in
Radiophysics and Electronics from the Nizhny Novgorod State University, Nizhny Novgorod,
Russia, in 1984 and 1990, respectively. From 1984 to 1999, he held several full-time and
visiting research positions in Russia, Switzerland, and Germany. In 1999, he joined the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University, Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada, as Associate Professor, where he became a Full Professor in 2002. He held
visiting professorship at the Department of Communication Systems, University of Duisburg-
Essen, Duisburg (2003-2005), and the Department of Network Theory and Signal
Processing, Munich University of Technology, Munich (2004). From April 2005, he has been
with the Darmstadt University of Technology, as a Professor and Head of the
Communication Systems Group (FG Nachrichtentechnische Systeme). His research interests
span the areas of signal processing and wireless communications, with primary emphasis on
spatial diversity in MIMO communications and space-time coding, multiuser
communications, statistical signal and array processing, robust adaptive beamforming,
parameter estimation and detection, spectral analysis, and physics-based signal processing
for sonar, radar, and seismology. He has (co-)authored several book chapters, some 100
journal papers and some 160 referred conference papers on these subjects. He has also coedited
two books: High-Resolution and Robust Signal Processing , Marcel Dekker,
2003 (with Y. Hua and Q. Cheng), and Space-Time Processing for MIMO
Communications , Wiley, 2005 (with N.D. Sidiropoulos).
Dr. Gershman is currently Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters and
Editor-in-Chief of the EURASIP Book Series in Signal Processing and
Communications . He was Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal
Processing (1999-2005). He is also on Editorial Boards of EURASIP Journal on Wireless
Communications and Networking and EURASIP Signal Processing Journal. He was a
Guest Editor of the EURASIP Journal of Applied Signal Processing in 2004, and is
currently a Guest Editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Signal Processing .
He has been a member of the Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Signal Processing
Technical Committee (TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (1999-present), and from
2005 he has been a Vice-Chair of this TC. He has also been a member of the Signal
Processing Theory and Methods (SPTM) TC of the IEEE Signal Processing Society from
2005, and a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Publications Board from 2006. He
was a keynote speaker at the NATO International Symposium on Smart Antennas ,
Chester, UK, April 2003, and the IEEE International Conference on Antenna Theory
and Techniques (ICATT’05) , Sevastopol, Ukraine, 2004; and delivered numerous invited
talks worldwide. He was Technical Co-Chair for the IEEE International Symposium on
Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT’03), Darmstadt, Germany,
December 2003, and the Fourth IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Signal
Processing Workshop , Waltham, MA, USA, June 2006. He was General Co-Chair of the
First IEEE International Workshop on Computational Advances in Multi- Sensor
Adaptive Processing (CAMSAP’05), Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, December 2005, Co-Chair
of the ITG/IEEE International Workshop on Smart Antennas , Duisburg, Germany, April
2005, and Tutorial Chair of the 2006 European Signal Processing Conference
(EUSIPCO’06), Florence, Italy, September 2006. He will be Technical Chair of
EUSIPCO’10 in Hannover. He has been a member of technical committees of some 20
international conferences and workshops including IEEE ICASSP, IEEE SAM and SSP
Workshops, IEEE VTC, EUSIPCO, IEEE WirelessComm , and PIMRC.
