Everyday our employees work hard to provide electricity to our island. In this issue of Currents we focus on how we keep our employees and membership safe. I encourage you to read about how signs on poles can have a detrimental effect on utility workers and how planting a tree in your yard is a potential problem for your electrical service, if not carefully planned with the help of the Hawai‘i One Call Center. September 15 through December 15 marks another SOS season. The SOS team, led by Marie Morin at the Kaua‘i Humane Society, is working hard on the program. We welcome Marie to Kaua`i and wish her and her team a successful SOS season. We are excited about the advances KIUC is making in the way of technology. Investing in smart meters will help us serve you better by improving efficiency, reliability and affordability. There have been many misconceptions and half truths floating around on the smart meter issue. To inform and educate our membership, a list of frequently asked questions on smart meters is included in this issue. We also are making steady gains in the social media realm. KIUC's Facebook and Twitter pages work to inform members on what is happening at the coop, provide tips and support community efforts. We also now maintain a channel on HawaiiStream.com that provides video of KIUC meetings, shares important coop messages and much more. October is coop month! 2011 marks our ninth year as a coop, and as in every October issue in the past, we have listed our unclaimed patronage capital list. If your name appears on this list, please fill out the form on page 55 to claim your money. Patronage capital is one of the benefits of being a member of the cooperative. Instead of working to make money for stakeholders, we work for you. And we will continue looking out for the best interest of our membership as we charge forward into the future.
