CFL Means Conserving, Fundraising and Learning! Energyefficient bulbs will help residents reduce energy use and save money 6 KIUC CURRENTS From October to December, Blue Planet Foundation and KIUC invites school and sports groups to host compact fluorescent light exchanges that double as fundraisers. Groups will be paid 40 cents for each bulb they replace to reward them for educating others about energy efficiency and reducing Hawai‘i’s dependence on foreign oil. These exchanges will give residents the opportunity to swap their old, incandescent bulbs for free, energysaving CFLs. Since CFLs use 75 percent less energy than conventional bulbs, participating residents will reduce their energy consumption and lower their electricity bills. The CFLs are supplied by the Kaua‘i Energy Efficiency Project (KEEP)—a partnership between Blue Planet Foundation and KIUC that introduces residents to the benefits of energy efficiency. “It’s a winwinwin situation,” said Ivory McClintock, a Kaua‘i native and program specialist at Blue Planet Foundation. “Students get to learn about the importance of our energy independence while fundraising and saving energy for their community.” According to McClintock, who spearheads the KEEP program, this will be the first of many initiatives to help residents save energy on Kaua‘i. Another program to watch for will be an energy competition to help people not only change their energy consumption, but the way they think about using energy. Schools are not the only ones that will be exchanging bulbs in the community. Local businesses took on this program as a service to their community throughout September. Food Mart, Kapa‘a Shell, Lawai Menehune Food Mart, Kekaha Menehune Food Mart and the Ele‘ele Subway, which hosted CFL exchanges for the community during September. "It was an honor to have been able to participate in the KEEP project,” said Derek Kawakami, owner of Menehune Food Marts and KIUC’s representative for Kaua‘i’s North Shore District. “We are very grateful to both the Blue Planet Foundation and KIUC for allowing us to offer the neighborhoods that we serve an opportunity to become more energy efficient.” In all, the businesses were able to distribute about 4,000 CFLs, which will save more than 2,200 barrels of oil during the lifetime of the bulbs. “We look forward to working on future projects like these with the Blue Planet Foundation and KIUC,” said Kawakami. “Many thanks goes out to all of the participants.” For more information on this project and future programs with KEEP, please visit greenkauai.org.
