Breaker Box Safety
One of the most important parts of a home’s
electrical system is the breaker box containing the
circuit breaker panel. It serves as the electrical
distribution system for your home, and is constantly
distributing and receiving electricity. The panel
protects from power surges and other possible
hazards. With regular maintenance, experts say
today’s electrical panels can function properly and
protect homes for 30 years or more.
As part of our safety issue, KIUC wants you to be
familiar with the circuit breaker panel in your home.
It divides the main supply of electricity into
individual circuits that bring power to rooms and
appliances. It also acts as an important piece of
safety equipment, housing circuit breakers that
switch off electrical circuits if those circuits become
overloaded. This greatly reduces the likelihood of
short circuits and potential electrical fires. Following
key safety procedures makes accessing and servicing
the breaker panel easy and safe.
Electric Shutoff
It is important to know where all of your home’s
electrical panels are located and how to turn the
electricity off in case of emergency. Because electric
panels and shutoffs vary widely, you will need to
locate your main electric panel and find which
switch or circuit breaker shuts off the main feed.
Your home may be equipped with fuses or circuit
breakers. If your home has circuit breakers, you will
need to open the metal door of the breaker box to
reveal them (never remove the metal cover). The
main circuit breaker should be clearly marked
Shutting off the main breaker only disconnects the electricity to the internal wiring in the house. The line from the electric
company will still be active! This is especially noteworthy if there are downed electric lines in your yard. Turning off the main
breaker will not deenergize the downed line. You should exercise utmost caution around any downed lines.
