Laureta Resigns from KIUC Board of Directors FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 4/3/08 Contact: Shelley Paik 808.246.4378 spaik@kiuc.coop Lihue, Kauai, HI - 4/3/08 - After serving for two years, Board Member, Alfred Laureta. tendered his resignation effective April 30, 2008, citing personal reasons and a desire to devote more time to his family. “His experience and knowledge as a federal judge helped him earn the trust and respect of Board and Staff early in his tenure; he was a great addition to our Board,” said Dennis Esaki, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and friend. “He was very instrumental in our strategic planning process and in his role as Chairman of the Policy committee, leading the Co-op to lasting administrative policy.” Director Laureta was also an active member of the Member Relations Committee where he helped staff meet the challenges of better member relations during a difficult time. “I have enjoyed every bit of being a KIUC Director and I am confident that the Board, our CEO and Staff will continue working together to fulfill KIUC's mission,” Laureta wrote in his letter to Esaki and CEO Randy Hee. “He was an active and objective member of our KIUC Òhana,” said Hee. “Staff will miss him.” ### 4463 Paheè Street, Suite 1 • Lihue, Kauaì, HI 96766-2000 • (808)246-4300 • www.kiuc.coop KIUC is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
FOR IMMEDIATE REALEASE 5/21/08 KIUC Board Member Kawakami Resigns to Pursue County Council Seat Contact: Anne Barnes 808.246.4383 abarnes@kiuc.coop Lihue, Kauai, HI - 5/21/08 - After serving for two years, Derek Kawakami has tendered his resignation from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative's Board of Directors, effective May 20, 2008. Kawakami stated in a written letter that he will pursue a seat on the Kauai County Council and foresees time constraints that may hinder board service. “While my passion for the membership and the island’s energy resource is fervent and evident in our past accomplishments; my passion for the greater good of our island at this critical point has given me an overwhelming desire to serve our island on a broader scale,” said Kawakami. "Director 'the Prodigy' Kawakami has proved to be a moving force on the board at KIUC. He came in with an open mind and is a quick learner," said Dennis Esaki, chairman of the board of directors, and friend. "He fights for what he believes is right, or as he always said what is 'pono'. Although his loss will be felt on the KIUC board, I am sure that Derek will continue to be a leader in our community," Esaki concluded. Director Kawakami served the KIUC membership as Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee, playing a key role in the collaborative effort to establish a 15-year Strategic Plan, which looks to ensure reliable power, fair rates and sustainable energy. He also served as Second Vice Chair and member of the Executive Committee, and as a member of the Government Relations/Legislative Affairs Committee. "Derek Kawakami served KIUC’s members and employees well as a Director of our co-op. He will be missed as a board member but we expect he will always be involved in our cooperative. We wish him well in his campaign for a County Council seat," said Randy Hee, KIUC president and CEO. ###
